I am concerned. They removed home sharing in iOS8 for our music didn't they but word is that they'll bring it back in 9. I'm VERY CONCERNED as that i what i'd use ATV for mostly. I get the impression that they want you to put everything in the iCloud but thats not happening for me!

If you go to this "compare" link, I noticed the difference in this section about iTunes. Notice the new ATV on the left does not mention iTunes Music and only lists Apple Music. That does make me think maybe they are not going to allow streaming from a local iTunes library. The same issue is a little unclear with photos also.

If showing my local photos and music requires the Apple cloud services, this will be a no go for me.

According to PC magazine "The old and new Apple TVs support AirPlay, Home Share, and various other ways to stream media to your HDTV"
I agree it would make no sense to remove this, but they sure are not being clear about it on their web site.

probably because their main focus is Apps, Games, Apps, Games, Apps, iTunes Siri Search...and the Computers and stuff have no newness to them.

Thanks for this. That iCloud integration is interesting also. I believe the current ATV ties everything in with an iTunes account. This creates a problem for me with my music under an iTunes AppleID and my photos synced to a different AppleID (iCloud account). So this looks like it would allow both to sync.

I have 3785 movies in my iTunes library that I stream to my AppleTVs on a daily basis. This was also my first concern. But seeming whats been posted it seems like we have nothing to worry about.

The only thing that seems will be missing on the New Apple tv is a radio App for Local stations. You will have to wait for Tune in or or anther one like it

Due to a poor internet connection, I stream all my content from a HDD attached via iTunes. Whilst some of it is stuff ripped from DVD, most of it is downloaded from the iTunes Store (at a glacial pace). It has always seemed counter-intuitive to go to 'Computer' to watch a film ("movie") when there is a 'Movie' icon staring at you, often with your latest download staring at you. Wouldn't it be good if selecting that film played it from your local cache, rather than streaming it from the Internet? Then you wouldn't need seperate Apps to watch local content vs streamed content.

I think you've missed the point…. it's intentionally designed this way so that the most obvious buttons lead to something that Apple wants to SELL to you. I am in a similar situation to you, rural location, slow internet connection, large local iTunes library (although the bulk of mine was ripped from DVD). Apple is not all that interested in people like us. They are interested in people who have fast internet connections, and I suppose that makes business sense.

They also want to keep all your data on their own servers, where they have complete control over it. This makes the user more dependent on them. "It is what it is" and people like us will just have to make the best of it, I guess.

Assuming the computers/home sharing IS in place - and I really need it to be so - will be interesting to see if the universal search picks up content from a personal library as well as iTunes Store, Netflix etc..

That's the big question about all video viewing apps. Is is all or will Apple limit it to friendlies.

Isn't Airplay a function of Home Sharing? After all, don't you need Home Sharing turned on to airplay?

Once again.. I hope this is correct. It's just that that function is not mentioned even once in the product pages.

No.
I have 2 AppleTV's at my office that are only used for AirPlay from an iPad showing X-Rays. There are no iTunes account even associated with them.

Home Sharing, allows the sharing of media from an iTunes account on a computer on the network.
Home Sharing must be enabled and signed in on iTunes on the computer and the same account signed in to on the AppleTV.
