Right. And of course you realize that going through a manual "close" routine every time you use the phone app isn't as convenient as having it automatically return to the contact list. I don't consider this a major issue, but I am always looking for tweaks to simplify my usage. If I can avoid a tap or 2 every time I make a call (before or after the call) then I'm happy.

And you do realize you HAVE to go through a manual close routine anytime you use ANY app on the iPhone...

After a call, it does default back to the Contacts then I just hit Home. And again, you will always have to use the Home button to get back to the Home screen regardless of if you are in the Phone app, Contacts App, Google app or Safari app, so that step is unavoidable. So again, not sure what is so difficult or what more do you want.

Ok, let's add the Contact app to the iPhone and then we'll get even more people complaining "Why do I have contacts in both my Phone app and Contact app, this is unnecessary, it was all much cleaner with everything in one place, blah, blah, blah, blah" and then guess what, you will STILL have to use the Home button to exit out of the Contacts app!

I give up on you lazy, whining I-want-everything-so-simple-that-I-don't-have-to-lift-a-finger type people!

First, I never specifically said anyone in particular. Second, I was answering the OP's question as I quoted . Third, You are still insinuating that I do drugs and I am highly offended by it even if you changed the words. I have never touched an illegal drug in my life and for you to insuate that I am high is very insulting and it pisses me off!!! So please remove it!

Thank You!

omg...this is what's wrong with the world today. everyone is so UPTIGHT! lighten up bro....it's an internet forum where no one knows you.

all you uptight, sue happy, politically correct people annoy me.

for chirst sake, don't call me white....i'm European American because 900 years ago my ancesotors came from Europe!

lol.....i told ya to just let it all go! lol

Well then, you need to try out the iPhone first before you judge it because you don't need to "deal" with the Phone app. You simply need to touch it...

It's really quite simple. Touch the Phone button on the screen and the first thing that comes up is all of your contacts (if that's what you have it defaulted to, which I do.) Couldn't be simpler.

And from there you simply choose the contact you want by touching it, then you can either touch their phone number to dial, touch their email address to send an email or touch their mailing address to launch their location on Google maps.

Having a seperate Contacts button on the iPhone is redundant and unnecessary clutter (to those of us who actually have an iPhone.)

I have tried it, I will judge it, and it is my OPINION that a contacts button is needed on the home screen. The point of customization is to allow each individual user what they want on THEIR device. You like leaving the phone app on the contacts and that works for you, great. I'm sure you will remove the contacts button from the home screen on 2.0, more power to you. Or maybe when I have an iPhone my opinion will magically change to yours and every other iPhone users' opinion out there. Until then I'll sit back and read other peoples' constructive criticism of the iPhone and continue to be a part of the discussion about improving the device.

I am not your "Bro" and you are right...you don't know me so you use common courtesy and respect when addressing users and don't insinuate that they use drugs or are someone's "Bro". Of course, I am native american and have no rights so to all you invading Europeans....:D

i know, I know, this is it I promise... I'm just worn out now.

Fair enough.

Just to throw some fuel on the fire, I would like the separate apps for the iPhone on the home screen (Contacts, Videos, Music, etc).

Nice try, but...

A couple of people have already touched (pardon the pun) on this but others still seem to think this is a missing feature on the iPhone, so let's clarify:

1. The iPhone never needed a seperate "Contacts" button because the Contacts were built into the Phone application itself.

2. The reason they added a "Contacts" button to the iPod Touch is because it HAD NO PHONE! So it needed to have a seperate Contacts app., but the iPhone does NOT.

Clear? Good. Move on...

I think you need to make this simpler. Not everyone gets it.

<Treads lightly into thread>

I will say this: A separate "contacts" app would make sense if there were an easy way to flip through and see a contacts full information quickly. In other words, if it's just like the contacts within the phone app it doesn't make sense to me, but if it shows a name and primary number, or primary mailing address, then it would make more sense.

FWIW, most smartphones that separate contacts from the phone app are ones that have layers of menus and launch screens, like WinMob and Palm. Since you're never more than a button press and a tap away from contacts right now, it isn't as important. As the UI becomes more complex and you are more likely to be several taps from the phone app, a separate contacts app might make more sense. I still think it's a visual thing for most users, but that's where I'd see it add value to the experience.

The absolute maximum number of presses it takes to get to contacts is 3. from the home screen its 2 and if the last thing you looked at in the phone app was contacts, its 1 press. If you people are to lazy to do that then why are you even bothering having a phone at all? why are you bothering to come on here? why even bother getting out of bed?

***** ridiculous.

Because people want their phones to be easier to use? What's the problem with wanting shortcuts to desired functions? My old phone had 2 button dialing and I didn't even have to look at it to call my favorites. I don't expect that from a touch screen but that doesn't mean there aren't ways to evolve the UI.

I'd take it even further: double tapping home from standby brings you straight into contacts (or keypad or ipod or whatever you have your settings configured for). I'm that lazy. I've been wearing the same bathrobe for 3 days.

I think you and a few others are missing the original point of the thread. The OP stated it as if the iPhone was missing a feature in general [Contacts] that the Touch has.

As far as your reference to shortcuts, I'll quote what has already been stated by others:

Touch the Phone app> List of contacts comes up

Touch the Contacts app> List of contacts comes up

There really is no difference and I do tend to agree that this is all a bit silly to be debating. There are way more important things in this world than whether a Contact app will save one simple little step over a Phone app.

Just my opinion on it all.

I'd take it even further: double tapping home from standby brings you straight into contacts (or keypad or ipod or whatever you have your settings configured for). I'm that lazy. I've been wearing the same bathrobe for 3 days.

I do agree that the assignment of the Home button to whatever you want would be a nice idea.

How abouts do i go about getting separate contacts? is the app on installer as standard or do i need to subscribe to a specific source?

The Treo has had the contacts built into the phone app for a long time, so I'm sure Apple factored this into their design since (at the time) the Treo was the top smartphone.

The whole contacts/phone app thing is cumbersome when you are trying to dial somebody quickly. At least the Treo had physical buttons that sped up the process in some cases. Nice to see Apple adding more user control for those who want it.
