Just like powerstrokin said, all you need to do is find a friend with a Military ID (active, retired or dependent) and you'll be able to walk right through the front gate with them, then buy stuff at the exchange. If anybody ask for your Military ID at checkout, just use your friends and everything works out perfectly.
Not sure about the regulations now, but that used to be a guaranteed way for your military friend to lose exchange privileges forever if you got caught. Your military friend could buy it for you and make it a gift, signing a form indicating that it was a bonafide gift.

only if that friend wants a nice OTH discharge, which will be
a stain on every resume for the rest of his/her life. Is it really
worth the $40 or $50 in sale tax? even McDonald's rarely
hires part time employees who had OTH discharge.

this is NOT legal advice... but just my personal observation,
having family member who served over 30 years in the military
justice system.

Luckily I live within a short driving distance of Delaware which doesn't have sales tax. Therefore its where I go for most large purchases including iPhones. While no where near the highest my state has 6% sales tax so ~50 dollars is worth the drive. I've saved myself over 500 dollars in Apple products alone by going there.

I feel like a cheap ass doing it but money is money.

The State of Delaware and its legal residents thank you
for your small contribution to their economy? Make a
side trip to their racetrack and double the money that
you save?

I think you don't pay tax in Oregon... I ordered it through Opas.com which is a forwarding company (I don't live in the US, so I needed a US address to deliver it and then they send it to me). Besides being able to purchase my iPhone and having it send to me, another benefit of buying with them is that my "virtual" address is based on Oregon... where you don't pay any sales tax! :)

Important to mention this is my first time using the service... so I hope everythong goes well! haha.

Hi, I know its tooo late to ask this question :)
How is your first experience with Opas.Com ? Is everything Ok ? To which country you shipped from US virtual address ?

Even if you buy in a state that is tax free, you are required to declare it in the state in which you bought it. Do people do that? I am sure some do, majority don't.

Either way, eBay and Craigslist is kind of a nonsense example seeing as how the end goal of the OP is to save money. That won't happen on eBay or CL...
Not true. If I buy a camera from B&H Photo in NYC and ship to Delaware there's no sales tax involved or owed.

That's... not what I was saying.

I think what you meant (which is the truth and law) is that for instance I live in CA. If I order a laptop from B&H, they will not charge me any sales tax, but I still owe that sales tax to California since I had that order shipped there and use it here. I also thought there was some new law that was making online retailers who do not have a presence in the state the order is shipped to, to still collect the sales tax for that state. Thats part of the reason why Amazon started collecting sales tax for orders that are "Sold and Shipped by Amazon.com". In fact, I think B&H is the only online big retailer I've dealt within the past year that doesn't collect out of state sales tax,

Even if you purchase from a non state tax state, if you live in a state with sales tax, you will be charged for the appropriate sales tax amount upon purchase at checkout (online or over the phone). If you physically purchase in state - no tax. One of the reasons I live in Oregon, along with cheap vehicle registration and open spaces :D
