Well, it does have the extras, just only when I stream directly from Apple. When I download there are no extras (no "menu").

They did, I have a number of old movies that include the extras. But, as discussed earlier in this thread, Apple changed that, you must now stream the extras. Yet another way they have "improved" iTunes.
iTunes (the application) can still play downloaded extras. The problem with the old downloaded format is that it wasn't supported on Apple TV (except the old first generation) and iOS devices, so the extras could only be watched on a computer. The new format works on all devices, but is streaming only. I think overall it's an improvement. Downloading extras never made much sense to me since you rarely watch them more than once.

Some of us are different from you. :) All I can get is very slow Verizon DSL in my rural location. Streaming perfromance is poor, even in standard definition. I have plenty of disk space on my iTunes server and want to have all my content stored locally.

I'm pretty sure you're wrong about AppleTV support for local extras. IIRC, they made them available with a firmware update on the AppleTV 3, however only the extras that were included in HD movies and not SD. Regardless, this is just some kind of marketing thing from Apple IMO. It surely wouldn't be hard for them to make any version of the AppleTV compatible with locally stored extras. For some reason, they just didn't want to do that. IMO, their whole direction has been away from local iTunes libraries. They would prefer for you to be totally dependent on their own servers, where they can control everything. But "it is what it is"…

And I actually enjoy watching the extras repeatedly over the years, provided that they are of decent quality. Watching a documentary beforehand generally enhances my enjoyment of the movie. Most of my library was ripped from DVD, and if the DVD extras are decent I also rip them and put them in the "documentary" genre.

Obviously. That's why I wrote "I think" and "to me". :)

No. It was never possible to stream downloaded extras to an Apple TV. Watching extras on the ATV only became possible when they introduced the cloud-based extras in 2014.

To be frank. Content owners (networks/studios) really don't want local storage. They much rather a streaming locker system.

If you have extras but they won’t play on a Mac try this from Apple.
Hold down CMD Alt on the left side of keyboard as well as P And R
Press ON once and hold for the second gong.
This is hard single handed but i used a pen in mouth.

I got it to work for a couple things. Just tried it with ant man and worked just fine. But then X men days of future past (which I remember having extras) doesn't have anything. Once I click on the movie it just plays. Wonder if they took extras away for some movies? Can't imagine why.

Is there anyway to see which movies in your collection have extras without playing them?
dose X men days of future past have the New or Old I tunes Extras? Apple decided to redo Future Movies & add the new Extras layout to older movies as time go's. There did this so anyone that had a apple tv 3 that cold not download the Extras file. The new layout is bundle or stream into 1 movie file as a Still menu with Music & 1 background Photo or photos changing in the background every few secs. The Itunes original Extras layout had real animated menus just as if you had the DVD!! Miss that I wish there bring it BACK! Now that apple tv4 is out there could of kept the Real menus you see on the DVDs. So anyways if you log into itunes on you Mac or PC see if there a download or if already downloaded to your pc or Mac there should be a text link that says play Itunes original version click it see if it plays if the menu looks almost like what you get when buy the dvd or blu-ray. Then that movies extras will not play on apple tv 3 since it don't have a hard drive and the old extras won't stream. So there will have to add the still menus Extras to that movie for players that need to stream the Extras and can't download them. Now if you have apple tv 4 since it has 32g or 64g harddrive belt into the new apple tvs. There should be a way to download the old extras & play them right on the New apple tv. But there may of not even added to wear you can download the old Extras to the new apple tv yat? ;-( Good luck hope this helps! Also hope itunes finds a way to bring real dvd & blu-ray menus back to itunes! :)
