I didn't think they would bother with a MacBook event, expected them to just throw them up on the store lol.
If they have a redesign, like what's been rumored, then I think its in their best interest to promote that by way of a media event, if its just a spec update, then year.

If its a spec update, I think people will be very upset, at this point.

I couldn't agree more, while I like the rMBP design it's become very stale.

According to the last MacRumors rumor (Apple Aiming for Late October Launch...):
Our understanding is that Apple is planning to seed one more beta version of macOS 10.12.1 for developer and public beta testing early next week, with a goal of finalizing the software update by the end of that week so it can be loaded onto the new hardware currently being produced by Apple's supply chain partners.

This timeline could of course change should last-minute bugs or other circumstances require adjustments to Apple's plans, but if it holds true, it appears Apple could have its new MacBook Pro models ready to ship to customers some time in the second half of October.
So they were hoping to finalize 10.12.1 by October 7, but they just released a fourth beta two days ago, so that is probably holding it up at this point... I wonder if the release of the GM will coincide with the event announcement... but the quiet period for the earnings call might mess with that if we don't see something by Monday...

Considering how long the shell has been out and how long the rumors have been around, you'd really think if Apple cared about macOS, software wouldn't be the hold up.

I don't believe the OS is the hold up, I don't know what is, but I just can't believe its on the software, that is causing any sort of delay.
