Update on my 17"

I go back to the same :apple: store and the genius tells me to duplicate the flickering. After I booted it up the screen was fine.. (i thought to myself ****, now what.) So spend a good 20mins playing with the power settings loading safari with multi tabs, plugging and unplugging the magsafe. Then I went to update the software and the screen starts to flicker.

They acknowledged and waived the restock fee... and gave me a new 17" matte 2.66. I thought matte was only online customization? But this screen is a whole new world. No blue tint, no dim problems, no flickering @ lowest brightness. My screen model is 9CAC. I can only thank the :apple: Gods for a good 3rd machine.

Wait so your local apple store had a matte screen?? Niceee.

Yes. I was shocked to find out they had. I was told glossy+2.66 was only what apple store sells. The exchange mbp 17" kept coming $50 more for the base 2.66 and he had no idea why until he went back to ask someone. Came out and told me b/c it was a matte screen. Im thankful that he stumbled on a matte 17" in the backroom :D

BTW. I am in NYC and the :apple: I went to was Apple Rooseveltfield Mall.
In case someone was wondering.

Any 2.93ghz with the matte at the store??

I was at the Regent Street Apple store in London, and they had three 17" models on display. Two of them was Glossy with 98 and one matte with 9CAC.

To my surprise the matte screen was both brighter, sharper and had a richer color gamut in my opinion. As a previous MacBook 15" Unibody machine owner, I was also surprise to how little brightness the 98 display panel had. Considerably less then the previous 15" and the MATTE 9CAC screen.

I also looked at dark and black images in fullscreen, and I do not see "richer black" that Apple is talking about regarding their glossy screens. Matte looks just as nice on black/dark photos.

I have ordered the 17" with GLOSSY, after today I have canceled the order and re-ordered with MATTE. It wins hands down in my eyes.

Since I have 9c98 and think it isn't very nice uncalibrated (much too blueish and quite washed-out - certainly not what I expected from Apple's marketing blather), I'd be highly interested in a nice calibration profile as well.

Why Apple keeps to have to make life difficult is a mystery to me. Probably because they get away with it, since we keep buying their stuff anyway.

Hey hydr, do they have a matte 17" unibody on display in Regent Street, London? Will have to check it out if so

Compared the two

I have a 2.93 glossy which is the 9A98 screen. Went to the calgary apple store tonight to see what they had. I saw 2 models, and one was the 9A98 and the other a 9A99 screen. Perfect! I was able to compare my 98 screen with both, and much to my surprise, couldn't tell the difference with mine and the 99 screen. The 98 screen they had there seemed a little duller than mine, but not by much, and next to the 99 screen, no difference. So there probably are some good 98 screens out there. I'm happy to have one of them!

9c98 vs 9c99

I've been in two different stores. Both had glossy 9c98 and 9c99.
The 9c99 much better. Even Apple personnel confirmed that 9c99 is looking better than 9c98 is bluish without vivid colors. I want to but 9c99 but don't know how to order so I get what I want instead going thru frustration with 9c98. Does nybody have idea how to accomplish this? I have couple guys at Apple store trying to find out how this might be possible, if it is?

Does anybody have idea how to get one? I am talking about 2.93?
How can we make Apple provide what we want?

Not to confuse people any further, but
I also have the 9c98 (2.93 GHZ + glossy screen)
and think it looks absolutely great uncalibrated. I have not experienced
neither the dullness og blueishness that people talk about.
I did, however, compare it to the anti-gloss screen and found mine much brighter and more colorfull.

All I can say is that apple's quality has gone to crap since the switch to Intel from PowerPC.
Corrected for you. ;)

As for the 17" MacBook Pro screen itself, why do a lot of them have a blue tint to them (at least the ones I have seen)?
