I'm currently wearing a SS Series 5. Before the keynote, I was ready to upgrade to the next Apple Watch. Afterwards, I'm not so sure. According to specs, the S8 has the same chip as the S6 and S7. Even though an S8 is an upgrade from my S5, I wish it had a newer chip. I'm concerned that buying an S8 now would not be good if Apple releases the S9 with a new chip. My S5 works for me, although its battery health is at 81%. Having a new battery would be one reason for me to upgrade, and a bigger screen is another reason.

As for the Ultra, I tried it at my local Apple Store and it was too bulky FOR ME. The digital crown rubs against my arm when I turned it, which is a little annoying. But I have the same concern as the S8 in that the Ultra has the same chip as the S6 and S7.

I'm still on the fence about upgrading, but right now leaning a little towards staying on my S5.

I'm curious to know about how old the average watch is. I know asking in a forum full of tech enthusiasts will more than likely skew my answers to newer watches, I understand the bias, but I'm still curious to learn!

If you're sticking with an older watch currently, what's keeping you from upgrading?

If you have a newer watch, or maybe even just purchased one of the newest, what influenced your decision to upgrade?
I love the ultra. What a great upgrade going from series 3 to series 5 and now the ultra. Legitimately a noticeable improvement. Faster processor than the series 5. I can launch apps to control my car quickly. And the programmable third button is awesome. I use the action button as to bypass the pin lock in my Tesla. And it’s great. Battery life is great. Cellular last all day now.

I was concerned about the chip going from series 5 to ultra but it is faster when launching 3rd party apps. There’s ap to control my car which often fails to communicate on my series 5. But in the ultra I’ve noticed a big difference in speed of launching actions. Very happy with the processor. I know apple has reused chips in the iPad Pro and iPhones and there is a bump in speed for each generation. It not a big leap but it’s a bump. For the Apple Watch I believe series 8 processors are noticeably better day to day app use on my ultra vs the series 5.

now that Target and Amazon have discounted the 7 45 mm cellular to $380, I am getting a bit more interested in jumping from the 5 to the 7 . Since the 8 does not offer any meaningful improvements for my use unless I tried the Ultra with its brighter face, the cost to upgrade to the 7 would be ~ $300 after trading in the 5. Still on the fence, but leaning towards a newer model. the trade in value won't increase by Black Friday time...

I'm currently using a Series 6 that I got in 2021. I upgraded to that from a Series 3 whose screen popped off due to battery swelling.

My Series 6 is at 97% battery health (already a lot better than my Series 3 fared after the same amount of time) and still performing perfectly well on watchOS 9, so I can't see myself upgrading unless it physically breaks like my Series 3 did, or the battery health dips enough. I've always been less about upgrading every year and more about getting my watches to last as long as possible.

Series 5 Ti. It continues to be excellent. Will likely wait another year before upgrading. Love the natural Titanium and the matte/brushed look. Nothing wrong with the Ultra (it's great) but I'm going to sit this one out for now. Still believe the Series 9 will have the flat edges akin to the rumored Series 7 but it doesn't matter for me at the moment. Battery health is 92% after 3 years! Happy. Why make the move?

I’d still be using an S3 if I didn’t kill it by jumping in the pool in July. I upgraded to an SE1. I just missed a great price on the S7 by a few days that would have tempted me to go that route.

I use my watch to keep track of time, look at incoming texts at a glance, as an alarm, and for haptic feedback for driving directions. There are extra features that would be nice to haves that aren’t critical to me on the newer watches.

I've owned the S0, S3, S4, S6, S7, and now Ultra. To be honest its because in general I am addicted to upgrading and usually I find myself happy I have the "latest and greatest" and always disappointed because in general there is never a big jump year over year. I can honestly say only S3->S4 and S7->Ultra have felt like "big" year over year enhancements. I hope someday I learn how to slow down and keep a watch for more than a year or two but I have more money than sense.
