Although I've never owned a car, I'd go with the GTI or the Subaru. Subaru is terribly underrated, I find. Just as reliable as Hondas and Toyotas; I have friends who drive their parents old Subarus; they're ancient but don't sound it, and ride nicely. And the GTI just because it seems nice and sporty, and slightly more classy than a Mazda 3. Both of them are also very good looking.

I like the design of the C30 but Volvos aren't terribly common, are they? I imagine shop costs would be high. They're also expensive cars.

My real suggestion
Get rid of your car. Get a bike. If you live in a city, there is absolutely no reason to own one. You'll save tons of money and feel loads better as a result.

Of course these days there isn't too much wrong with the new 2011 Mustang V-6 either.

Slightly bigger than the other vehicles mentioned, but nearly the same price and MPG.

Is that better feeling due to increased fitness or just the smug sense of superiority you'll experience from being a pretentious prig on internet forums? Hard to tell, I guess.

All the cars in the poll are fine choices, but I'm partial to the speed3. They're not the prettiest cars on the block, but they handle amazingly well for being front-wheel drive and torque steery. That'd be my pick, at least.

So I'm unbelievably angry with my Jeep Commander as I just went off warranty (38months of ownership, 39000 total miles) and found out today that my transfer case is going out ($1000 rebuild or $2200 replacement), so I'm getting this repaired and I'm trading this beast in and want to switch it up. My wife has a VW Jetta and I love driving it, so have decided to go a similar route.

Right now I'm deciding among these cars:

Volvo C30 R-Design
Volkswagen GTI
Subaru WRX
Mazda Speed3

Curious if anyone has advice or insight on these cars, particularly the Volvo because they currently offer the 5 Year full Warranty and 5 years free scheduled maintenance. Or if you have a suggestion of a vehicle I'm not considering, feel free to post. I want a smaller car that gets good mileage, but is also fun to drive.

I'm not sure how you chose this list, but, a while ago I rode in a Ford Escape Hybrid, and, I really liked it. In my experience, Fords are very reliable. If money were no object, I would buy one. The Suburu is also a good choice.

Just know that VW/Audi tends to be the absolute worst in terms of reliability among the Germans.

Then do a google search and find out how bad VW can be at accepting warranty work because the cars are just a nightmare for them to diagnose and they know they won't find the problem.

VW=beware.

Yeah, this won't be possible living where I live. Lexington, KY has one of the weakest public transport systems I've ever seen, and I don't see myself biking 22 miles to work every day.

Really good info and suggestions on here, to the guy mentioning the V6 mustang, if I were going to buy a Mustang I would have to get the V8. I think the heart of a Mustang/Camaro/Challenger isn't a V6 econo motor.

I would buy either the C30 or the Subaru. Repairs for the Subaru might be a bit expensive though.

I have a 2009 GTI and it has been perfect so far and it is a blast to drive. So I highly recommend buying German trash ;)

Another vote for the GTI.

I opted for the 2.5L Rabbit instead to save some cash, but even it is a blast to drive. These cars are incredibly fun. I can't even imagine how much more fun my Rabbit would be though if it got down the road a bit quicker.

Love the looks to, and I couldn't be happier with my local dealer. My local VW dealer has better prices in their service department than virtually all other repairs shops around. They have a board hung up in the service bay that compares their prices to their local competitors. I get a synthetic oil change (VW uses synthetic in most (all?) of their vehicles) there for $43. Granted, I might have lucked out on a great dealer, but I have been very very impressed with my VW experience so far. Mine is a 2007 with 45k on the odometer and I've enjoyed every minute of it.

If you plan to only drive your car while it's under warranty then you can buy anyone of the cars listed and your repair costs are going to be non-existent (unless you break something yourself). However, if you plan drive it past warranty I would stay away from "Swedish and German trash" as Frisco eloquently put it.

In general I don't buy German cars. Not only because I refuse to give zee Gehmanz any money for personal reasons but also because after early 90s they adopted the model of "buy our very overpriced cars new with warranty or suffer the consequences". The only thing they care about is how to vacuum the customer's wallet clean whether it's a new or used car this motto shines through their so called "engineering" all too often. Some people do get lucky and get a car they drive for a while without too many problems but chances of buying a nightmare on wheels are significantly larger with a European car in general than with a Japanese one.

I also drive the "German Trash", I have an 04 Touareg...however I voted other and my suggestion is the Audi A3. You seem to want something smaller and sporty and I think the A3 fits that nicely.

Jeez.....what did the Germans ever do to you? And by Germans, I mean the current, living Germans running the car companies, not Hitler.

Their parents/grandparents did enough to last many generations. Plus I'm not hunting them down with a rifle, I'm only refusing to give them my money. Let's not go into this here since this thread isn't about disliking Germans. I gave an enthusiast's point of view from the technical side so let's concentrate on that part instead.

I have to say, by the same token then, it's rather puzzling that you're enthusiastically endorsing Japanese manufacturers.

Maybe you have your reasons, but...

Curious if anyone has advice or insight on these cars, particularly the Volvo because...

..the Volvo's one of the few cars that truly looks good in white. ;)

If you boycotted a country because of things their ancestors did, you wouldn't be buying anything from anywhere. No country has a clean past. Except maybe Canada, but what do they make besides maple syrup? :D
