I'm sorry this is a little off topic but I wonder if anyone could recommend some good comics and places to get them digitally online. I have always been a lover of the newer style artwork but never delved into the comic book world. I recently downloaded the Marvel app and read the New Avengers series available on it and absolutely loved it. The artwork is incredible. Can anyone recommend something similar? I like the kind of style that was on the first series of Heroes if that helps.

Edit: David Finch and Tim Sale are two that I like apparently as they were responsible for the Heroes and New Avengers (not together obviously).

Comic Zeal just updated to allow transfer of uncompressed CBR and CBZ files through iTunes. This should take care of my concerns with the wifi sync and with the compression (as there shouldn't be any now). I'm too busy to actually download and evaluate the update right now, but I will do so later tonight. Perhaps someone who owns both Comic Zeal and Comic Reader Mobi could compare the two; if I'm satisfied with the Zeal update, I probably won't drop the money on Mobi.

ComicZeal update - thumbs-up. In case you're new to using the Shared Files thing in iTunes (as I was), go to Sync, Apps, then scroll down. It should be obvious from there. (If this doesn't show up, you may need to sync or update the app on iTunes first.) No problems with a test file. I'm not sure this completely removes the use for the separate Sync tool, though, since that also has a built-in rename tool. *shrug*

They also fixed a problem I was running into frequently, where if you did a page turn gesture too fast/too broadly it interpreted it as something else and popped you back out to the load screen.

Everyone is talking about different file formats. But where do you get comics in digital form?

(I haven't been in a comic shop in many years, and have just been reading collections lately. But I'm excited about the idea of being able to read new comics every week.)

well... if you know the keywords to search for. Like maybe the publisher's name and one of those file formats mentioned here... Google might help you further...

Um. I'm honestly not sure the comics I have are even legitimately available in digital form. (Vertigo?) My knowledge of this particular industry's foray into digital is nil, apart from the Marvel subscription app. I think the CBR/CBZ formats were just what ended up being used to 'share' comics.

And yeah, you would need to seek them 'in the wild'; or if you mean straight up legit, just search the app store for Comic. You'll see Marvel and the other publishers offering subs.

Yeah, I should have clarified that I was looking for a source of digital comics that was blessed by the copyright owners for those works.

I just have to hope that DC gets off its ass and gets an app out there, since about 95% of what I read is DC/Vertigo (as opposed to Marvel).

Well, you can scan your comics, for one thing.

Comic pirates are at the point where they have tiny lists of the handful of existing comic issues that they HAVEN'T scanned; meanwhile, the major publishers offer a paltry selection of digital comics if they offer any at all. They're doing a bit better than the music industry in that they're not going to be caught completely off-guard by the effect that tablet computing will have on comic/manga piracy, but they're still essentially sitting on their asses while their revenue model goes flying out the window.

Comic Zeal and Comics Reader Mobi will mostly be used by people who get their comics from Bittorrent trackers and Direct Connect hubs. If you want official comics, keep an eye on the Marvel app, the IDW app, and the Iverse app. And don't hold your breath.

I think it still downconverts the files, as it still does 'importing' after you sync the files over itunes... takes a long time too

according to the appmaker it maintains the original resolution.

Could it be that it's generating covers for the overview or something? You got a screenshot of the library?

I bought the app, but don't have an ipad yet :p

I have to admit the Marvel app is amazing, but I have no interest in Marvel comics in general.

I'm really hoping Dark Horse and Image Comics will come out with similar apps.

I use mycomics and it's the best comic app I tested so far. and it's really easy to get the comics on to the devices.

comiczeal's new update=win

best comic app out there hands down (for those with massive .cbr / .cbz files)

You don't really need special features read comics on iPad. CBZ/CBR are just a bunch of compressed JPGs/PNGs. You just need to decompress and display. Since the screens is so big you don't really need to zoom each panel.
Yeah, you can just load them into iPhoto and make an album, and I bet it would be a pretty nice reading experience in the Photos app.

I was having the same issue on Comiczeal with the latest update. It's great that it does iTunes direct loading, but it takes forever to upload it into the iPad app. 35 standard sized comics took about 20 minutes. Spoke with developer and he is aware and working on it. As for the resolution... I can't see a difference between using SyncDoc versus iTunes sync. Resolution looks identical to me. I really really like Comiczeal and have supported it since day one, but Mobi right now has iTunes sync and it is way way faster and the resolution is much better too... HD quality. Doesn't blur out when extremely zoom'd in.

So even with the update Mobi still has better quality than Comiczeal? Good to know.

I've never been into comics but like others I had my interest piqued by the Marvel app, and I want to make sure I get the best comic reader. Zooming and quality is important as my eyesight isn't great.

I used the iTunes file sharing to move 70 cbz over to my iPad and it took less that 10 minutes. Comiczeal is great

Don't get me wrong... I love Comiczeal. I just think it needs a bit more polish to be as good as it was on the iPhone. I am still using it as my main app for comics, but since I cannot see a difference in quality of image between Syncdocs and iTunes Sync... I will stick with Syncdocs. It is faster and the file sizes are much smaller.

As for Mobi... it has its pro's and con's. I do like how you can use a magnifying glass... and it snaps directly to each lettering bubble. Very cool feature. It's sorting is terrible. Just a big long list of books.

comic reader mobi

Comic Reader Mobi will soon upgrade as well

changes are:"
fixing ftp sleeping bug, "unsorted files" bug, add hires start up image, allow volume buttons to change pages.Add "Stretch to Fit". Allow Disabling of lens.

Im happy to see Comic Zeal update so soon, Comic Zeal is more gui polished, and Comic reader mobi has more features and comics for some reason just look better.

Hope someone makes a reader that combines both, but for now i rather pay more and get comic reader mobi.

I can only seem to find an iPhone version of this, and it seems like you need a separate sync application (I.e. Not iTunes) Is there something specific that makes this worth the money?

Im really disappointed in the latest Comic Zeal release. The "importing" of the cbr/cbz files is really sloooow. They need to work on the app more. I've supported them from the start but i might move to Comic Book Lover or even iTunes.

problem is, they don't have an ipad yet. So all updates are thrown out without testing
