This sucks. I sell my first iPhone, to go back to Blackberry. Now that I once again want to go back to Apple, ATT screws me over. Why not just offer an unlimited plan? I'd estimate that although 98% of users only use 2GB or less of data, 50+% would buy the unlim. plan. Idiots! They could be making more money. This is bad for everyone. Way to go, ATT. I might just switch to Verizon now.

they did this cause most of the 2% where using like 20 gigs. this is whats killing their network. figures you people do nothing but complain even tho this is what you have been asking for.

I'm liking the new plan pricing as it will allow me to reduce the data plans on 2 iPhones in my family plan. My wife's highest usage in the past 6 months was 135MB, while my daughter's highest usage in the past 6 months was 450MB. I can then add myself, with the 2GB plan and only see an increase of $5/month.

you have a blackberry.... you can just add the blackberry data plan and thats fine

Not if you plan to use it w/ an iPhone. BB data plan won't work for an iPhone.

How does this help since those 2% won't be stupid enough to switch???

I think that I'll be keeping my grandfathered data plan for at least a month just to be safe because my data use is about to change drastically.

Currently I have an iPhone 3GS and I'm on a college campus with wifi available everywhere I go. Even with heavy use, I've only been averaging ~220MB/month which I could easily have gotten down below 200MB if I had wanted to.

(1)I'll hopefully be upgrading to an iPhone 4G, which will be faster, have videochat, shoot larger size pictures and videos, and do other things that encourage higher data usage

(2) I graduated and won't be on campus with the wifi network

So my cellular data use should go up pretty drastically... but will it ever even hit 1GB? I doubt it, I'm the type of person who has zero qualms loading my own music and videos on the iPhone flash storage and not relying on streaming media. I'll probably eventually change to the 2GB plan.

But why not keep the grandfathered plan for the first month or two of my iPhone 4G and non-college lifestyle just to be sure.

I'm currently on the original subsidized iPhone data plans of $20 unlimited + 200 texts and $30 unlimited +1500 texts. When I upgrade to the new iPhone I know that these plans are no longer offered. However, will I still be able to keep the unlimited plan as a current smart phone customer? I just don't want to be forced into one of these cap tier data plans.

I suggest you find a way to get on the $30 unlimited 3g plan quick, take the suggestion of others and find a friend with a 3g or 3gs pop in your sim, and ask for a data upgrade.

assuming VZWgets iPhone and has similar plans, I'll probably be getting the $15 200MB plan equivalent (whichever is the cheapest). I already have an iPad 3g so I plan to use that if I need to use extended internet use outside of wifi, and only use the iPhone for simple searches and light browsing on the day to day basis.
If iPhone stays with AT&T, then I'll be waiting a little longer for iPhone then.

Yes, I checked with ATT. My BB data will not switch over. No way, no how.

Precisely. The 2% will not switch cause they will obviously never give up unlimited. It doesn't solve the problem, it creates a new one. If they want to solve that problem, they need to address the technology incorporated into the management of their network. They need to develop the means to handle all the traffic. Plain and simple. They aren't solving any problem(s), they're just concerned with how to make an even more lucrative profit.

I will grandfather this baby until ATT forces me to switch. I dont tether much, but have the option of going over 5GB is a nice cushion.

you are wrong, i had the same problem and I asked ATT. as long as you have a smartphone you can switch between smartphones :)

Not true, the iPhone plan is specific to the iPhone. Most likely AT&T changed your smartphone data plan to an iPhone data plan and you didn't realize it.

I've done this several times. Everytime I realize I have an issue when my 3G data stops working.

Lol, maybe that's how you do it on the Gulf Coast. :D However, back here on the better side of Florida, my local ATT store told me I couldn't. It might have something to do with my family plan.

it is true.
1. I sell ATT
2. ATT rep told me

technically it is a different plan there is an iphone plan, a blackberry plan and smartphone plan, but as long as you are in one of these you can switch to a newer model or device (any type of phone) and keep your 30 unlimited. If you are a new customer...you are screwed. Call ATT and ask and you will see :)

I'm keeping my $30 unlimited plan. Everyone is looking in the past with their data usage, I'm looking towards the future. With the new iPhone, there will surely be new apps and programs that will kill your data usage.

You can always downgrade later if you feel it's not needed but you can never upgrade back to unlimited again.

This is exactly what I'm going to do. Although my usage is low now, I'm thinking about possibilities with new phone and 4.0. Let's see after a few months how much data I use then can downgrade. Currently I'm under 200mb a month which is shocking. Guess I use wi fi mostly.

Well, I voted for 2 GB but that's IF there are no surprises when the new phone comes out. So I'm waiting before I change.

I'm really kind of expecting video-chatting to be a Wi-fi only feature. If it instead turns out to be a 3G data thing then I may keep my unlimited plan.

So...probably 2 GB, but I'm gonna wait a while before switching.

I agree!! 5 gb for 30 dollar plus if you ever want iPad to use u spend another 25. So, 5 gb + 2 Gb for iPad cost $55 per month. Datapro 2 gb + iPad costs $ 45 per month but you get 5 gb less. For same gb, new plan costs $50 dollar more per month, $600 per year. So, tethering is not worth it.

Time for me to bow out and admit defeat.
