I'm typing this from the PBG4 12" 1.5Ghz with 1.5GB RAM, two good condition batteries and a 64GB SSD.

How did you get 1.5GB RAM in your 12"?

And for that matter, how are you running on two batteries at once?

My mistake; 1.25GB of RAM is the total and yes, I shut down and change the batteries as required. Unlike the 15" and 17" models, the 12" PowerBook must be shut off between battery changes (unless you are connected by the AC). It only takes a minute or so to get back to where I left off though.

Before i bought a new battery off ebay for my ibook i had to keep it on the ac adapter and it wasnt easy becuase it had to be in the EXACT correct position and now my ibook is dead so i can part out if someone wants some spare parts or to upgrade ram

I know how that feels.

When I first got my PB, it held very little charge, so it had to be perpetually connected to power. And, it always got very hot and loud, because its thermals weren't renewed yet.

And this was all just before Hurricane Irma hit, so I at that point had two problems to think about. ;)

But now I'm curious...

@eyoungren, how did you guys hold up in Hurricane Harvey?

?????

Well…Phoenix, Arizona is about 1,185 miles away from Houston. Although I HAVE lived in Houston that was from 1975 to 1980. We've been in Phoenix since 2000 after 20 years in California.

So…I guess I have to say we held up just fine… :)

Did you try G4FanControl to raise the temperature-threshold for the fans?
I did the exact opposite :D 52°C is the upper limit I can live with, else the surface gets too hot, especially when placed on the lap

With a temp-threshold of about 65°C for drive/CPU/GPU temperature is on a steady-state without starting the fans.
That's possible when one uses the PB as a portable workstation, but not as a laptop

but the faster CPU gets much warmer than the iBooks.
it does indeed! ;)

The fans of my 1.0GHz TiBook are always busy too
Same over here, still have to find out why they are constantly running

Noisy? My TiBook and AlBook's only have the whirring of the HDD's
What's your thermal upper limit? Quite high I guess?

No worries!

I had a European friend once ask me about some storms on the east coast. They had absolutely no idea that we were about 2300 miles away from all that so I had to explain it to them. No biggie. :D

I loved Pheonix.

I'd like to live there but y'know. Visas. Waking up every morning and going to Waffle House was great.

That's true! My 12"PB (65°) and my 2008 intel c2d MBP A1260 (75°) get so hot at the bottom, that it would cause thermal injuries to the skin.
I use iLap-stands all over the place: to cool down the machines; to stuff cables, hubs etc. beneath; to avoid a bath in coffee etc.
They are 'even' meant to be used on the lap ...
Yesterday I've got a rare 12" iLap stand for my little SteamBook. :)

I sorely miss the 12" 1.33 iBook I owned about a decade ago, definitely my favorite laptop I've ever owned. I've always preferred the look of iBooks over PowerBooks, but since owning a 12" 1.5 of those, I must admit I do see the appeal in them over iBooks.

These days I only have an original blueberry clamshell iBook, and the aforementioned PowerBook. Neither really sees much use, but the PowerBook does get put into service every so often when my MBP is busy with other tasks.

The 12-inch PowerBook is definitely my favourite and sees the most use (I have three – the 867 MHz, 1.33 GHz and 1.5 GHz model, each dedicated to one or two operating systems), but I keep one (12-inch 1.33 GHz) iBook around because...

1. It's the only PPC ultraportable that gets the translucent menu bar in Leopard.
2. It's my PPC Linux guinea pig.

This ain't the solution if one wants an ultraportable.

It is if one is expecting the ultraportable to do things only a regularportable can do, like having better sound, keyboard backlighting, higher specs, better thermal management, higher resolution, easier serviceability, etc., etc., etc...

If one still wants an ultraportable with at least one of these qualities, one has to look somewhere else, because then at that point an old PowerPC ultraportable is not going to satisfy them. Ever.

I use both my 12" iBook G4 and 12" Powerbook G4 equally. The iBook runs Debian sid, and the Powerbook runs Leopard. Each has their own distinct tasks and I spend pretty much equal time on both.

I admit to having severe gear lust for a 12" Macbook, despite its shortcomings. It's the form factor that appeals to me. I'm still on the hunt for a reasonably-priced 11" Air (sorry... a 2010-2012 Air is NOT worth $400, at least to me) to stifle that a bit.

I hear you. My main ultraportable is a 12" MacBook and I love its small size and low weight. As far as I'm aware, there's no other ultraportable that is as small and light – others are either bigger, heavier, or both. I'm not keen on its keyboard, but I've grown accustomed to it enough that I can bear it.

17" PowerBook for me, it's my most powerful PowerPC portable so seems most usable, I'd like something like a 12" G4 iBook with a decent battery but I've not had a single decent battery on any PowerPC device I've owned.
