Which DVD ripping software do you recommend?

Handbrake no longer works with DVDs, have to MKV first. MakeMKV won't work with discs from different regions - previously it did.
Make MKV no longer backs up discs, have to Open in Disc mode, so as far as I'm concerned, it's one step away from not working at all anymore.

MakeMKV rips DDV's just fine for me . I have an older MBP with built i drive and just ripped a R2 disk. DVD Player wants to change regions to play the disk but I did not do that and set DVD Player to ignore disks I insert. Not sure wh you are having problems.

Multi-region stopped working quite a few updates ago. I have 2011 iMac with and external BD burner (never burnt a BD, even my clients want DVD) which has worked fine for years, but lately the software seems to be fussy about regions. [the internal drive died years ago, just outside AppleCare]
I did a recent OS reinstall, and the region fussiness persisted across that, so I don't think it's anything additional that got loaded somehow

Yup. Latest version. Ripped several B/R as well as Region 2 DVDs on internal drive; the mac running Yosemite - maybe something changed in OS? DVD drive is R1. Have you tried a different external drive?
