My lord, this is painfully bad in so many ways

Apple has truly lost its marbles.

What is that black stuff gathering at the top like burnt roasted marshmallows?
Your guess is as good as mine.
It took me a minute to realize what I am looking at. That black shade appears to be an indication that there is stuff "above" that is out of view because the "pane" has been scrolled down.

Looks gross. I do hope they have some refinements to put in before the public release. The bottom status bar seems like something that obviously needs attention, but the layout all around just looks like a mess. I'm not too worried about them making less usable space in the window (I keep my Finder windows pretty large) — though I'd prefer it if they didn't — but, having the top button controls "on top of" other stuff is just yucky.

It's remarkably "incorrect" to have the stoplight icon cluster on a floating window.
That gives the understandable impression that the close button (red), for instance, would close the floating sidebar it's within, as opposed to the entire window.

This design is so bad -- on so many levels.
They have people doing this who are totally inept as actual interface designers.

I mean, it’s still headed by “lets just hide everything behind gestures” Alan Dye … the guy designs pretty UIs with hard to discover tools and functions.

Apple's design inspiration for those ultra-rounded corners and the floating menu buttons and traffic lights placed near them to get that perfectly mismatched and unaligned curve or radius effect that may cause slight anxiety:

At this point, Sequoia; but if they refine Tahoe to scale down the size of the UI elements and apply a lighter weight to the text in the sidebar, I think Tahoe may take the win. I am a big fan of Sequoia which is one reason I’ve held off on installing the 26 beta - I feel like they really got the OS to a good place design-wise so I’m very hesitant on Tahoe.

I am also quite fond of sequoia

Usually I instal the beta each spring and it becomes my main OS

this is the first time in many years that I’ve gone back to the previous

A user on Mastodon mocked up a better alternative to what Apple has put forth thus far in the beta.

Thoughts?

I think it's much better.

God! Much, much better!!

It shocks me when a simple user is capable of what a whole design team in one of the biggest companies in the world isn’t…

Please Apple. Grab that idea! You know what’s said about genius…

Honestly this really clarifies something for me. The floating button approach maybe can be argued for smaller phone phone screens. But when you have a larger window the visual hierarchy just doesn’t make sense without a consistent bar like this. Everything just turns into noise otherwise.

That screenshot is really sad to look at. Just about everything is a step backwards in terms of usability and, dare I say, taste.

The menu bar leaves me speechless. If they're taking a 'glass' approach to their UI, then surely the Sequoia menu bar is closer to this vision since it is quite literally a diffused bar behind the menu items? No background on the menu bar does absolutely nothing to improve productivity, since I'm one of those users that keeps windows below it?

Regarding the menu bar: while I can understand what you say with your last sentence, and having a sleek glass bar with the new glass optical distortion effect could be cool… when I imagine a magnifying glass just like the one we have on the Liquid Glass sliders, sliding across the menu… Frankly, I’m quite happy they left the menu bar as minimalistic as possible.

I mean, I’m starting to dislike all this exaggerated liquid glass effects, especially on sliders, and I haven’t even tried the beta. I feel everything is… a bit too much. And while I’m all for the new glass texture, I’d rather keep the UI as minimal and, why not, as flat as possible. That doesn’t mean having a bit of prominence, less flat that what we had until now. But… with caution.

Okay, who’s going to be the first to send this concept to the Cupertino design team?

I think they need to see it can be done much, much better.

I know how proud they are of themselves, but… I mean… I think if we make a poll, a vast majority of us would choose that concept design, that even reminds us of the classic drawer menus from Tiger, with a much more elegant design, than the aberration of the new “sheet of frosted glass floating above the window”. It’s so unnecessarily overthought…

I do agree that caution is the best strategy, but it just seems that they (Apple) would rather go for a uniform approach across all platforms rather than considering how users interact with their devices.

I think what frustrates me more than anything is that the underlying concept of Liquid Glass is here to stay now, and I don't see many drastic changes occurring up to release. I can't understand how Tahoe is supposed to be better than this:

I know a lot of this discussion is subjective, but I think the Sequoia menu bar is beautiful.

I think the big issue at play is that they have prioritised 'consistency' with interfaces rather than the input methods of each interface.

This is so obviously not a pointer interface it's baffling, and proves that TC has no backbone whatsoever when it comes to making big decisions.
Yes the funny thing is they where like “transparent menu bar makes the screen seem bigger”.

First thing I thought when trying the beta “My screen feels smaller”.

No wonder with that UI 😞
