The Google/Apple UI divergence is really interesting. Google's betting on youthfulness, vibrant color, aggressive font sizing and contrast. Apple is aspiring to something "quiet," calm, and subtle, with a few dynamic flourishes.

Apple could be better attuned to what people want from their devices now, but they're not executing perfectly. Legibility issues were flagged immediately. Meanwhile, Google advertises that they've reduced visual recognition time for key UI elements.

A user on Mastodon mocked up a better alternative to what Apple has put forth thus far in the beta.

Thoughts?

I think it's much better.

A million times better. Clearer and readable. I can’t believe that 100s of engineers worked on the Liquid Glass design and a single designer draws better in a week. :(

I like this... very chill. Reminds me of some early Thievery Corporation and Tosca (a project of Dorfmeister of the great Kruder & Dorfmeister duo).

I held-Balcony to Thievery Corp. Live in ATL three years ago . . . they performed even better than in-studio :)

Funki Porcini's ("Long Road" is from their 'Headphone Sex' albom) early stuff is sublime.

As for the Finder interface . . . it'll be refined before long.

This "floating-bubble" thing just doesn't really jibe with the clean aesthetic we've come to expect of a FM.

g*d-forbid AAPL chooses to move towards the way of the Windows 10 Explorer "I am so bland, I blend into every other window so much you can't make heads:tails" motif.

They'll get the Sidebar dis-continuity thing sorted-out :)

i'm not sure id describe liquid glass as "quiet"

Sounds amazing! Saw them at the Beacon many years ago in NYC and yeah, they're petty amazing live. Def will check out more Funki Porcini.

note: these are identical windows of the same size, with every option enabled.

this is one quarter of the screen as tiled by amethyst with 10 pixels of window padding, dock hidden, menubar enabled, 1728x1117
Tahoe looks like that cartoonish, bloated, iOS-like abomination? Good to know so I won’t even consider upgrading from Sequoia.

eventually we'll all get used to whatever tahoe looks like when it's finally released (just as we've always adapted). meanwhile, i find it amusing that ppl won't update because of the look of the OS, regardless of how well it may run 🤷

for me it's not just the "look"

the problem is that the new UI is that it is distracting and steals screen real estate. the gimmicky effects cause the navigation elements to literally overshadow actual content

every new update I try actually working in it for a few hours and it is always such a relief to go back to sequoia

it runs just fine sure, but no noticeable difference from sequoia, so neither better nor worse. this is not surprising since the entire Tahoe update is almost entirely a cosmetic overhaul other than the spotlight stuff, which still doesn't do enough to replace Alfred so not much use to me.

point being there is no compelling reason to update, but the UI makes it compelling to NOT update

it's still a work-in-progress (but you know that already). and i don't see any less screen real estate than i did in sequoia. tahoe is also easier to spell 🤣. but point taken, and the great thing is... we can do what we want 👍

MacOS has been running worse, not better, after each release - go check macperformanceguide.com for an idea of how deep the rot goes. The fact that not even superficial looks are good anymore is the negative icing on the cake.

not for me (& not for the people i work with, mostly sonoma or sequioa). tahoe is, so far, my best mac experience ever (pretty great for a beta, altho the macbook runs a bit warm, typical of a beta).

it's been fast, and stable. my apps work, and i can work.

well that sure was weird

something that maybe used to be a tech site that has transformed in to a homophobic far right blog?

I've been using Tahoe on a 24" iMac, and still have Sequoia on my other Mac. I spend a lot of time in Finder and my goodness the UI is killing me in Tahoe. Safari too. Something about Sequoia just feels so clean and sharp and Tahoe all these floating UI elements, app icon redesigns having a bit of blurry look to them, ughhh. Pains me every time I use the iMac to do a bit of work.

I'm not to happy with sharing the same first name as Alan Dye.

macOS Tahoe looks even more white and difficult to read than when Big Sur entered the stage.. just add a touch of grey - like with Yosemite.. what the hell is all this GUI updating for.. Mavericks, Yosemite, Catalina and Mojave was great.

Just build on that. jeez. Menu bar heighten, icon rounding, UI slightly adjusting. Not this gimmicky looking UI
