Unless the player has hardware acceleration via the GPU (Plex, Quicktime) it's mostly processor only with playing HD video.

My 9400m plays 1080p fine in Plex.

Gala causes stuttering

long time lurker first time poster here. I was just reading this thread and felt compelled to post my recent flash experience. When i first got my 2010 i7 MBP, HD video worked great, even in full screen. I have automatic graphics switching on so it was doing a good job making it's own decisions. The other day however, i installed the Flash Player Gala beta, and immediately i started to experience some pretty bad stuttering if i played HD in full screen, unless i forced discrete graphics with gfxcardstatus. So i uninstalled Gala and went back to Flash 10.0.45 and its flawless again. So anybody that has stuttering and the Gala beta, that could be your problem.

I'm going to try this strubinstein...thanks for the info...:)

I have the mid-2007 model MacBook Pro 15" with the nVidia 8600 GT and it handles 1080p just fine from the Apple trailers site. Video also looks wonderful in VLC. I mean, even this older MacBook Pro can handle high resolution HD like a champ!

After taking strubinstein's advice and uninstalling the Gala beta, I reinstalled the current Flash Player and everything is working perfectly now...:D

So gala beta is crap? noce to know... I use VLC and it handles HD videos pretty well, but it's always with the nVidia chip...

if its any help, I have a previous gen mbp 13 and can play 1080p video flawlessly. Even high bitrate (20Mbit/sec) , but when the bitrate gets to around 40Mbits/sec, i start dropping frames. BTW, this is with a 9400m and plex.

In theory Intel HD should be more than capable to play every 1080p movie. There is a nvidia Tegra chip that can do the same with less than a watt or so power consumption. If a chip has dedicated h264 acceleration that is no big deal at all.
But I know that Apple only gave Adobe access to the nvidia Cuda API and Flash has only video acceleration with a nvidia GPU currently. That is 100% Apple's fault but still under the 330M you should have significantly lower CPU utilization.
