How do you know they arn't, goose answer.

Ok then use it for extra skilled training for whichever sport? Put it towards an actual trip that they will remember for a life time? When I was 10 there was this thing called "outside".:D

I'd go for a refurbished iPad 4.
Otherwise there will be a lot of people selling iPad 4 to buy the new one in a while.

Disregard any other silly suggestion about your daughter. I'm sure she already has a bike, and is much better to buy her an interactive device like an iPad than a stupid toy or have her watching television all day long.

----------

Unless she's unusual for her age, she'll likely drop, lose, smash, etc. her iPad before it becomes obsolete.

)

My second son is 3 yrs old and play with my iPad 4 since he was 2.
With a very little care by me, he never dropped the iPad.

Go for an ipad mini imo.

Dude just wait for ipad mini 2 with retina display its coming soon...

----------

My 7yo and 11yo have been using ipad1 since launch, and have yet failed to smash, lose, etc. Kid's aren't as careless as you might think.

I, on the other hand, managed to break my ipad3 screen.

Back OT, get a new one, 32GB. 16GB fills up too fast. An iPad5 will have a life of at least 3 years, based on past experience. Buying an iPad4 would be false economy, IMHO, as you would be paying a lot of money for something that will slow to a crawl within 2 years as iOS updates to match new hardware.

+++1. It is hilarious the unsolicited parenting advice one gets from complete strangers. Often, I suspect such advice comes from those with no kids, or whose kids grew up in a completely different generation and whose advice is now suspect.

I would suggest you to wait for ipad mini 2 will be coming soon .I am also waiting for that:)

Yeah well where i come from you can't spend all day outside. You heard of sunburn, melanoma.
Moderation is the key:rolleyes:

I am getting my daughter an ipad for Christmas. She will be almost 10. I have decided on a 32, but can’t decide if I want to get her the newest model, or go with a cheaper, older one. She is not a big reader, although I wish she were. She likes to take pictures, play games and watch videos and although she listens to music a lot, she doesn’t put more than 15-20 songs on her ipod at a time. She likes to listen to the same ones over and over and over! I don’t want to get her something that is obsolete in a year or two but am trying not to spend a ton of money because I want to upgrade her ipod 4 to a 5 for her birthday 2 months after Christmas. Any suggestions? If I get her an older model, will it still be functional with newer apps? Thanks in advance for any help.

ipad mini will be the hand down choice. light, and price is cheaper than regular ipad.

A iPad can save you heaps on phone calls. My daughter uses FaceTime/imessage with her friends. Especially now as we don't have a home phone only mobiles. In Australia there is a App for foxtel which is pay tv, so when i want to watch football she can watch a show on her iPad.

Just for the closet parents, she also does: gymnastics/swimming/surfing/guitar/piano

Honestly, the tablet is the kid's board games/console games now. It's an all in one device so I don't think getting a child a tablet is wrong in this day of age.

To the poster: I recommend the mini because it's a great travel device due to it's light weight and size. It's got a good processor (wait for the update next week), and a decent screen which works with all iPad optimized apps.

I agree,

Or instead, get her a Mac. Let her learn how to use a REAL computer rather than a crippled one.

I'm worried we're going to end up with a generation of kids growing up on tablets who don't know how to use real computers. Tablets are toys.

you're worried? Growing in the 80/90s(born in 82) there wasnt really any computers till the late 90's. But i knew of all the tech coming out and was pretty on top of things. You dont think kids now a days know about the different type of computers and operating systems? Times a totally different. i cant even imagine growing up in this new technology era. I dont think you should worry about it. They are probably better with a normal computer than the average person.

I have ten year old twin girls who both have iPads and have had for a couple of years, they've never had new, I often buy a new one when they come out and they get passed down. As such they currently have an iPad 1 and an iPad 2 between them and they work great for all they do - reading, email etc. One is cracked from where they dropped it, one was left on an airport and luckily we got it back... but they both lust after my iPad Mini.

Chaos will ensue if a new mini comes out and I have one to hand down, that might cost me an additional mini!

For most apps and if it is in a case there's little to distinguish between the models in most ways that matter IMHO. I find your opinion that you may as well get the big one for a little more interesting as I see it almost the other way, if I can get the same functionality in a more compact unit for $170 less then why wouldn't I?

Each to their own but personally I think the mini is the perfect size for kids and cheaper to boot.

My 2 year old uses an iPad 2 with one of these:

He's pretty rough with it but that case is amazing.

OP...if this is a gift for your only daughter (I have three daughters) then I say go for the best tech you can get at the time of purchase to give the greatest lasting power of your purchase. iPad mini 2 with hopefully retina is your best choice. 32 gb. Having three kids prevents me from doing such things as that sets too high a financial precedent...they are happy with my hand me downs. :)

And screw all the folks who are making you feel bad about purchasing a device for your child. This isn't a parenting site. it's a tech site. Get over yourselves already and stop taking selfies in the mirror.

Best post I've seen on MR in 8 years.

Apparently you missed the post where the OP responded that his daughter already has a bike, plays outside, and is involved in team sports. Which means all the parenting advice in this thread is off-base, because he has that covered. So it is far from the "best post".

...as for the bike, zorinlynx, she has one and rides a lot in her spare time. She is an outside girl...she plays on a travel club soccer team...comments like that aren’t productive since you don’t know anything about my daughter.
