personally I have skipped every one until the retina mini, but I bought an iPad 2 for my father which the whole family uses (anyone ever used an iPad for boat navigation? It's awesome and was the main buying reason!).
For my sister I got an iPad Air (because I knew I would get the Mini and this way we get the best of both worlds)

Skipped the 1st Gen and 4th Gen full size iPad. Currently, I have a 1st gen Mini, but I have placed an order for my iPad Air.

Love how people have voted Air and 2nd gen mini already. Like them being released for 1-2 weeks is sufficient enough to say you've "skipped" them.

With the way people on here change their minds, those numbers won't be accurate in 5 months.

I got an iPad 1, and skipped all versions until the mythic iPad mini was released :p

I'm happy with that, but wanted an improved mini for my reading pleasure so I did take the plunge on the rMini, I'll give my first iPad mini to my lovely bride. A happy wife is a happy life :D

The iPad air is my first iPad. Didn't feel like the iPad was worth getting till now, that's all. It has been fantastic!

Got the 1, instantly regretted it after week 3. was too thick and heavy and had no real use for it. Wound up carrying a laptop bag with me and figured it was easier to just get a MacBook. Had to charge halfway through second day, and was basically a giant e reader and portable web browser.

Sold it and my 32gig iPhone 4, and bought a 3yr old macbookpro with the money, and swiped a 4s on my CC.

About 7 months later I won an ipad 2 through work. Started using it more and more, especially at work in order to easily show clients information without having to be huddled in front of a monitor, as well as walking through showroom. The fact it was lighter, and I was always transporting a MacBook, I didn't mind the extra weight over my shoulder. Battery life also improved as I was getting 3 days of usage after 1 charge.

About a year later I won an ipad 4 through work again, sold the 2 for 210 crisp $1 dollar bills and made my way to a strip club. I love the 4 because of the retina display, as well as it unifying the lightning port.

Unfortunately I lost the job that paid in ipad dividends in August, so I'll most likely be rocking the 4 until the air 2 comes out. Thinking about picking up a 1st gen mini for my moms birthday as she carries around a giant toshinba 16 inch laptop.

Skipped the 4th gen ... too little and too soon.

Technically I skipped the iPad Air, but I bought one for my mom so I sort of scratched the itch there.

Switched to iPad mini 1 to consolidate on lightning and because carrying around an iPad 3 in my hand for hours at a time when going out really required a death grip from my hand. I have a laptop or desktop if I need to be more productive, so the mini was a reluctant upgrade because the form factor was perfect but the specs were truly lacking.

Have the mini 2 now and it is truly great. I no longer have to suffer through low spec hardware to get portability.

Went from iPad 2 to Air. Skipped 1/3/4

For me it's always a matter of workflow/user experience reasons. The Air finally gave me enough incentive to upgrade (Retina/LTE/Weight/Speed/Camera...). Not all these changes were Air specific, but I finally had a list compelling enough to drop the money on a new device.

Just strictly due to finances, I've had the iPad 2 since release and STILL have said iPad. I think I'll finally upgrade to the Air at the beginning of the the year. And what a welcome upgrade that'd be!

  • 1 - skipped (plan to wait until product and app store matures before buying)
  • 2 - bought (iPad-exclusive comic app that I wanted so I bought against my better judgment)
  • 3 - bought (retina display - just what I was waiting for, LTE support was a nice bonus)
  • 4 - bought (128GB capacity)
  • Air - bought (but will most likely return, no compelling feature for me)
  • Mini - skipped (no retina)
  • rMini - will most likely buy

Bought 1st gen and sold it when they wouldn't update the iOS anymore. Got the 3 and am using it right now.

Skipped iPad 2, 4, mini, air and mini 2

In hindsight, I really wish I had took the 1, 3, 5 upgrade cycle. The 2 and the 4 were wastes of time.

So far have 1 and 3. Air is nice but not sure, for my use that I would notice the difference. The size of the mini is pretty attractive.

1 bought
2 skipped
3 bought
4 skipped
Mini 1 skipped
Air bought
Mini 2 bought
I hoped these last amazing purchases will stave off thirst for iPad Pro! Skip?

All.

My girlfriend has an iPad 3, my brother an iPad 4 and my parents both have an iPad 2, so I've spent plenty of time with most of the models released. I also bought an Air and returned it after an exchange thanks to display issues.

I skipped iPad 2 and 4 and will skip iPad Mini Retina. I'm going to stick with the odd numbers I guess.
