I got the black one and I think it's great. I do not use a case, and the scratches have been minimal and barely noticeable if there even are any. I'm reasonably careful with it but not over the top about it. The obvious thing to avoid would be putting it in your pocket with keys -- something I've never done anyway, even when I was using the 3GS.

The white does look nice from what I've seen on the Apple site, but if you're concerned about the 'scratchability' of the black one, I don't think it's too big of a concern as long as you be a bit careful with it.

Also, for comparison, I had a case on my 3GS, and the back was ruined because of it. No case so far on the 5, and the back is perfect. I realize they are different materials for the 3GS and the 5 in terms of the casing, but still an interesting point.

white and loving it.

quick thought for those saying white is girly....are you saying that if the iPhone ONLY came in WHITE, that you would not have one? Apple has made so many products that only came in white...with how much Apple is worth, i find it hard to believe that only females are buying them.

this is like saying i am not going to charge my macbook pro in public because the charger is white. god help us if they ever intro another color to the iphone line, lol.

The whole "white iPhone is for girls" thing is just insanely stupid. But I guess there will always be those who need to compensate for their insecurities.

I've got white and it looks absolutely stunning. Wouldn't trade for the black ever. Aside from noticeable scuffs, the black is just a complete fingerprint magnet. Looks nice if it's wiped down, but use it for any amount of time and it looks just nasty on the front and the back with all of those fingerprints.

the black one is extremely sleek

the white one is extremely elegant

i still can't decide a month later

I've actually found the black 5 picks up far fewer fingerprints unless you just ate pizza. Maybe a better olephobic or whatever coating.

You serious? The black pigmented glass front is a fingerprint magnet... the white phone doesn't show them obviously because fingerprints don't show on white.

If you're talking about the screens, then they're of course even...

I just noticed it doesn't pick up the fingerprints as much compared to my 4. Have you used the black 5?

I've always had black iPhones, but I chose white this time for the following reasons:

1. White does not show fingerprints/scuffs/"wear and tear" as easy as the black phones do. Go into any wireless or Apple store and compare the white phones to the black phones that have been handled constantly. I'm also afraid with the aluminum case that users of the black iPhones are going to notice a lot more wear and tear over time than the users of the white. (Not saying anyone made a wrong decision choosing black!)

2. I wanted something different this time around.

Black and love it, I usually switch off every new phone I get, had a white 4s, and a Black 3GS.

This, This and This

The black looks horrible(I have one) It looks extremely nice and classy when you take it out of the box, but when you start using it, it looks disgusting and un-appealing.

The oil and fingerprints just don't come off, I scrub and scrub every morning, lunch and evening like a walmart cleaner and the fingerprints/oil just moves to another part of the phone. Like FFS

I'm really looking forward to the white replacement coming this friday :)

I received a black on launch day and it came all scuffed up. The next day I returned it for a white that was flawless. But for the past 2 weeks, I kept thinking about reselling the white and getting another black one despite the scuffs. For whatever reason, I feel really uncomfortable using my white iPhone in public. Almost embarrassed. I ordered another black which will be delivered first week of November. I'll give black another try and will see if I end up keeping it.

It's strange, I've experienced that same sensation with my white model. In an office environment the iP5 already attracts a lot of attention but the white one seems to have a 'hey, look at me!' effect. I love the white, but have found that despite the scratches I'm too afraid to set it down on bare surfaces naked anyway, so if I'm stuck using a case I might as well get the black model.

Micro-fibre cloth does the trick for me.

;)

Black, no regrets. I care more about contrast than worrying about more visible finger prints lol.

Its a personal preference.
Asthetics aside, black frames help the colors pop more for apps and games, hence one main reason why tvs and most electronics usually are black. For Contrast.

White, because I'm a straight male ;).

Right up until I stood in the queue it was going to be black, then at the very last moment with the scuff stories starting, and seeing how much classier the white looked, I changed my mind and have not regretted it.

It's the more expensive looking, sophisticated, upperclass brother to its cheaper looking, working class black brother ;).

Lol . . . Please, share with us what you are really thinking. Excuse me, I had to. :p

Nice choice . . .Enjoy. ;)

I got the black iPhone 5 and I love it. Mine arrived with a very slight scuff on the side but was hardly noticeable. It is very easy to scratch though. If you are thinking of getting the black, and don't mind easy scuffing, I highly recommend it as it is a thing of absolute beauty! Decisions, decisions. :)

Here's how my iPhone colour choosing experience went:

I pre ordered black
I saw the "scuffgate" issue and started to regret it
I saw the white version in store and REALLY regretted it
I saw a colleague's black version and regretted it a little less
I saw another colleagues white version and regretted even less
I got my black iPhone (finally) and loved it
I got a few nicks and was sort of disappointed

Final verdict - I think the aluminium on the white version will look less scruffy over time, but may get dirtier? I don't know. The nicks are tiny and I don't really care, I have a case covering most of it anyway.

Definitely wouldn't swap out for a white version now. Very happy with my black iPhone :)

I buy black year after year, it's my preference.

Too bad the rest of the phone can't live up to the quality, performance, stability & durability of my much superior iPhone 4S.

Thankfully I had the foresight to keep the 4S. It's back in service now and I couldn't be happier.

Perhaps next years model will be back to Apples normal level of excellence. After all even Apple can't always hit a home run.

The beauty of being Apple is they don't have to. Good, bad, or otherwise, they sell all they can make. Knowing that, they are further encouraged to coast & do some profit taking.

One shiny Apple logo plastered on the back is all it takes.

It's all about vanity. :D
