While I didn't own one I'm going to say the 4. It was the external design was so out there at the time.

I would also say the 4. I thought I would keep my iPhone 3G until it stopped working on my but once I saw the iPhone 4 and how beautiful it was I just had to have it. At the time it was probably the best designed phone I had even seen.

Clix Pix, my sentiments exactly. Thanks for putting into words how I feel.

The closest to the original iPhone- the waiting in line, the excitement and the ease of spending $600.! cannot be replicated to this day although I suppose next in line was the anticipation of the Retina display.

I couldn't get that iPhone4 out of its shipping box on launch day any quicker.

I have to add that for me the next most exciting, coolest, neatest thing was the first iPad. Again I waited in line on Launch Day. They let us into the store.....I walked to one of the tables where they had iPads set out on display, stared at one for a moment, picked it up and squealed, "it's so beautiful!!!" I could hardly wait to get mine home and start playing with it.

As for the other iPhones, I'd agree that the iPhone 4 was pretty cool, looking so elegant and sleek. Probably it would be my candidate for the second most exciting/coolest iPhone...... That said, the iPhone 5 was a real surprise when I picked one up for the first time and felt the difference in weight. Each new iPhone has had some intriguing characteristic that has set it apart.

Looking forward to seeing what iPhone 6 will bring to the table.....

C'mon. Gotta have an option for the OG. Which was by far the most exciting and coolest. It was an amazing announcement.

----------

Gosh, there are sure a lot of johnny-come-latelys here....

That very first iPhone was without a doubt the most exciting, the coolest, the most amazing -- and none of its successors (although I've had most of them) could ever match that. Really. I still remember back in 2007 hearing in the months prior to its release about this newfangled iPhone thingy -- the "Jesus Phone" -- to come and thinking, "yeah, well...." and thinking, "heck, I don't even use the cell phone I have now, why would I want one of THOSE things?" Happily for me, the penny dropped, though, and it dawned on me just what new and exciting innovations the iPhone was offering.....and how they would be really beneficial to me. Lo and behold, that fateful day in June, then, I waited in line on that very first iPhone Launch Day, still really not quite certain about the device upon which I was to drop a substantial amount of money. None of us had seen the thing yet.

While waiting in line, using my old cell phone, I rang a friend. She bluntly told me I was nuts when I announced where I was and why. I grinned into the phone and said, "yep!" The time came for us to go into the Apple store....I dutifully forked over my credit card, received a nifty bag with the new iPhone inside, and moved on away from the sales area, pausing at a table where they had the new iPhones displayed. That was the first time I'd actually seen what I had just purchased. I picked up one of the display models, held it, thought, "oh, this is neat looking!" and then went on home with my newly-purchased iPhone.

It really was not until after I'd done the switch from my old carrier to AT&T and until I'd done the synching in my computer with iTunes and the new iPhone that the possibilities really began to hit home for me. All of a sudden I was able to sync my new iPhone with the two Macs I had at that time, all of a sudden I didn't have to spend a lot of time tediously inputting contacts' phone numbers into the new device, all of a sudden I could easily go online with this little thing.....the realization dawned that from this time on I would pretty much have a computer in my pocket. Wow.

Nothing, but nothing, can ever, ever beat that. That first iPhone turned the world on its head and those of us who were around for that are still savoring our memories of that time.......

I remember when I first took mine out of the box and powered it up. I had the exact expression/feeling that Kutcher (SJ) had when he 1st looked at the terminal Woz had created.

I was in awe. Haven't had that feeling before or since, And don't expect to any time soon.

The funny thing is that it was between the iphone and a palm pre. Thank god I picked the iphone lol.

I had a Palm Pre. I didn't have the hardware issues a lot of others had, on either mine or my girlfriends phones, and the WebOS operating system was amazing. Now I see that it's card style multitasking interface is coming to iOS 7, four years after it came out. I guess in this case the Pre was the one that was ahead of its time.

Having gotten that off my chest... :)

I have to vote for the 5, because that is the one I just got! :)

1. Original iPhone
2. iPhone 4

The original iPhone re-imagined the smartphone. That alone makes it #1. The iPhone 4 re-imagined the iPhone.

I don't expect that sort of progress every year, but Apple is behind on the incremental stuff right now in a pretty serious way. I have been screaming for years that I don't want a bigger screen... but... I want a bigger screen.

The iPhone 4/4S design is still the most elegant smartphone design I've seen to date. If the 5 had the same glass front and back with the silver trim I'd be in love.

I don't see how an S model can be more exciting than the original.

The 4 completely changed the mobile landscape with the retina display and industrial design. The 4S looked exactly like it but with upgraded internals. Not very exciting.

Personally, I think the 3GS was much more exciting than the 3G. The 3G literally just brought 3G and GPS, which while good, didn't match the 3GS's video recording, massive speed improvement, voice control, better camera (IMO).

3G may have been a better upgrade, however I don't think it was as exciting.

I would have to say 4/4s but I have to say I looooooovvvvveeeed the og iPhone ! I remember but mine unlocked so I could used on tmobile and took it apart to make it look new again ( bought used) that was a well built phone 3G/3GS ehhh the were ok not a fan of the plastic build! Scratching right out if the box! You new phone look years old after about a couple weeks 4/4s was just elegant and was so happy when sprint got the 4s I loved it and not I have the 5 I truly love the design no mater what a lot of the haters say it is an elegan price of hardware ( especially the white one ) just looks like a premium device

Most Exciting

iPhone 4
iPhone 5
iPhone 3GS
iPhone 3G
iPhone 4S

Least Exciting

I agree. In hindsight, the 4S was identical to the 4. I rarely use Siri and the speed difference wasn't that noticeable.

The display on the 4 was revolutionary, not to mention the beautiful design.

iPhone 3G
iPhone 3GS
iPhone 4
iPhone 4S
iPhone 5

Well for me the best was iPhone 4
it was the best update and it was truly innovation for that time. I mean it came out in the summer of 2010 and it was just so amazing.

None of those. It was the original iPhone. That was true innovation considering the technology back then and how the mobile industry looked.
