do you upgrade every year or every 2 years when your contract allows or wait till your current phone dies etc

3GS, 5 and 6+. My wife has had the 5 and 6.

We upgrade every 2 to 3.5 years. We keep our phones (i.e, we don't sell them to finance new phones).

3GS was my first because it was the first iPhone that came with 32gb of storage which meant I was able to replace my iPod video with it. Then 4S and now iPhone 6. I used to get them on contract, but my iPhone 6 was my first iPhone that I bought outright from apple. Gonna wait and see what the 6S brings before I decide to replace it.

3G, 4, and 5.

Would not have upgraded to the 4, but opened before selling it and was hooked on the beautiful screen and fluidity (speed) of interface and apps over the 3G.

Would not have upgraded to the 5, but people stopped being able to hear me on calls with the 4, and I desired the new aspect ratio of the screen.

Almost upgraded to the 5s just for the gold color and LTE (using a Verizon 5 on AT&T, only 4G), but could not find any gold in stock around me at launch, and my interest subsided later.

May be upgrading to the "6s plus" because of rumors that AT&T could be discontinuing 2 year contracts, and would like to lock in my upgrade.

Just the 5S as before I was that stupid stobborn guy that was convinced Android for those who "really knew what they were doing", those were a rough 2 years. Will be getting the 6S on release and hopefully now I can afford it; every one after.

I've owned every model starting with the original except the 5C and the 6 only because I got the 5S and 6 Plus respectively. The only one I haven't bought at launch was the 3GS which was an upgrade when my contract finished back then.

Have had the Original iPhone, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 (in black & white), iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, and iPhone 6+. :)

2g, 3g, 3gs, 4, 4s and 6+. I skipped the 5 series to go to the dark side, but quickly returned once the 6+ came out.
