long cables are no big deal. you're obviously unhappy with the quality of your recordings, and separation/isolation seem to me like an easy win.

I understand - thanks for trying to helping me but I don't have a problem because I now use a Macbook Pro 17" and that is whisper quit.

But I did record my podcast with my old iMac G5 for about 2 years. For recording a podcast being in a separate room is not so good for many reasons. What I did was using quite some noise filtering and the result was quite ok. But I am not sure if you want to do the same kind of filtering on music. I doubt that.
 
go for the iMac...the speakers are really good for a desktop (although i suspect you'll have your own)

advantage of the Mac mini is size and the cheapest mac...apart from that anything iMac beats it
