Black MacBook fully spec'ed.

I got the white one because I just couldn't justify using another NOK 1400 for the black one. My main employer did, and it is gorgeous... seeing the two next to each other almost makes me regret not forking out...

I don't really need a desktop, but of course it would be hard to turn down a fully spec'ed Mac Pro with two 30" Cinema displays or even a 24" iMac... ;)

desktop; 2.33GHz 2' iMac - i voted for this
notebook; 2.0 GHz MacBook - if multiple votes were allowed i'd go this one as well

in reality; 1.83GHz MacBook with 1.25GB RAM ;)

in my dreams - 3GHz Mac Pro, 16GB RAM, 3TB HDD storage, 4x30" displays - sadly i don't think there is enough money on the globe to fund that machine :p

I voted MBP 15" simply because that is what i have...... and i don't want it any other way!

Hey, you have a pretty nice little machine ;)

My top choice for a desktop would also definitely be the 2' iMac. For laptops, though, I would prefer a maxed-out 15" MBP to a maxed-out MB. For just 0.4 lbs. more, you get significantly more screen real estate (1440 width instead of 1280), vastly better graphics, and an Express Card expansion slot (which may not matter much now, but may in the future when 3G or even WiMax wireless cards become more common).

Why so many desktops vs. laptops?

Does anyone besides me find it so surprising that more than 2/3 of respondents in this poll chose a desktop as their top choice? I thought the market was moving swiftly towards people preferring laptops by a large margin. I think 2005 was the first year that laptops outsold desktops in the U.S., and I'll bet many of those people that bought a desktop wish they could've bought a laptop, where as the reverse is rarely true.

So what gives? I would've thought the MBP would've owned this poll, with maybe a few people favoring a maxed-out MB because they favored the smaller form factor. I'm very surprised at the strong Mac Pro showing. I haven't owned a desktop personally for more than 6 years, and over the past 8 or 9 years or so I've rarely been without a laptop at work.

Mac Pro 2.66 with 4 GB RAM, ATI x1900XT and a matched pair of 500 GB HD's, and 2 23" Cinema Displays, Apogee Ensemble and at least one Symphony Card, running
Logic 8.
And a MacBook 2.0 GHz with 2 GB RAM, 160 GB HD for basic portable needs. :D

For me, the maxed-out Mac Pro wins because I need all the power I can get. However, if I could get all that power (quad 3.0 16GB etc) into a 15" MBP I would take that hands down.

iMac 20 for me. I have a 17'' one already, and I think it's great in every aspect (compared to any other mac, that is, for what I am using my computer). But after working on it for more than a year now, I think I would like a larger screen. The 24'' is too big though. It goes without saying, I would like a maxed out 20''. (sighs..)

I voted mac pro plus cinema display, although if the option was 15" MBP plus a cinema display i would highly consider that.

At the moment i have a 15" MBP and I'm probably going to get a 20" or 23" ACD, unfortunately i can't afford the giant 30"! :(

Good points. All can say is that (a) I dunno, and (b) I voted for the bestest MBP, but (c) I am as of last night now currently the very proud owner of a refurb 24" iMac :D, and in ~1 week will take delivery of a BTO MB [white], so (d) in reality I've almost the power of the Mac Pro while at home, plus the portability of a very  MB. Yes, have heard that the laptops are king - but, with the way this poll is asked, guess if all things considering, the MP w/ all of its massive power + expandibility + etc. is too much to ignore. ;)

I would say it's because the top end Mac Pro with 30" ACD is sooooo much more of a power-house than a MacBook Pro.

If there was a mid-range Mac desktop... and you asked if people would rather have that or a MacBook Pro, I think you'd see more people choosing the laptop.

P.S. Gawd people, don't take these polls so literally!! I mean, I don't think the intent of the poll was THAT hard to discern. This is not the first time that I've seen a very interesting, hypothetical poll question rendered worthless by people reading it too literally.

I replied before the poll was up and before the OP substantially edited his/her post to reflect the change. The initial and pretty obvious question was 'if you were to be given a free Mac, which would you pick?'. Straightforward answer.

i voted for the 20" imac, fully maxed out of course. this is the computer i hope to be purchasing within the next year, but i will be getting the stock version of it. i think the 17" is a bit too small and the 24" is way too big. so yeah. of course i'd rather have a maxed out mac pro, but realistically the 20" imac is my choice.

"24" be way too big"??? Can not be!!!

:p

:D

Seriously, it is a massive amount of real estate on my desk,,, but WOW!!!
But, damn, it is so

connect anything to a 23" or 30" ACD and your pretty much gonna be happy with all the real estate (i got a pb g4 ti or macbook black hooked to mine). if they were giving out computers, i'd gladly take a free mac pro ;)

If could not be sold...

If it was something along the lines of "You have just won any one Apple Computer product, stock configuration, (plus display for display-less computers,) for a 10-year lease," then I would pick a 24-inch iMac. (My clarification is there to quantify that you don't get a fully-decked out machine, and you can't just go and sell it, you have to give it back eventually, albeit well after it's obsolete.)

Yes, a Mac Pro would be wonderful, but it truly is overkill, and I'd need a new computer desk. A 24" iMac would fit in my current computer desk perfectly, and would be perfect to watch TV on with my recently bought EyeTV Hybrid.

If it was a fully decked out machine, I would, of course, pick a completely loaded Mac Pro with dual 30" displays. :p

15" MPB, fully loaded.
There are very few times I've wished I'd had a desktiop instead of my 15" PB and while I don't take the laptop everywhere, when I do take it around with me it's pretty important to have something portable.

well, id go with the macpro. I do ALOT of multi taksing, for highschool, and graphic arts which i plan to pursue. I could say i dont need the power quite yet, but in the near fute i feel i will. I generally have about 8 apps open, right now 7. and i already have a 'top, my only computer right now so i wouldnt need a mbp.

24" model for me. I love my iMac and I don't think there are enough cards/upgradeable parts worthwhile for me to go after the Mac Pros. I can go away with the clunky tower and enjoy the leg space. Of course, Mac Pros biggest thing for me would be ram.
