Okay, I've pretty much decided that I'm going to order the 2.66 octo with base configuration. I'm still not sure about the LED display.

What would be good 24 inch 3rd party monitor to work well with the Mac Pro? Is the Dell 2408WFP a good option? I like the idea of the matte screen, removable cords, and adjustable stand of the 3rd party displays.

Many thanks for your advice!:)

That Powermax deal seems awesome, although supreme overkill for my needs...

However, I was planning on buying a 2009 2.93GHz quad core this summer (about $2,800 through ADC), but a 2008 3.2GHz octo core for the same price is certainly better, right? Even if it is overkill, if it costs the same, would there be any disadvantage? What would you guys do?

If you have any interest in RAID, particularly a hardware implementation, go with the '08 models. It's much easier to do internally, and external solutions aren't cheap by any means. Worse, when it's on a pricey system to begin with. :p

Me too! The powermax deal! Hells-ya!
It's half price from the 2009 2.93GHz and it's faster at almost everything, as fast at most of the rest, and a tiny tiny bit slower at only a very few things.

Great deal!

I wonder what the prices will look like come Christmas for the 08 3.2 and the 09 2.26 refurb. They've got to go down right?? I really hate to pull the trigger before I'm ready...

Mine showed up today :) Now to get it all set up and get some stuff transfered over! Gonna be a fun weekend!

Thanks again for all your comments guys.

I just submitted my order:

Graphics Card 065-8316 ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB
Hard Drive Bay1 065-8537 640GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/
Optical Drive 065-7924 Two 18x SuperDrives
Wireless Option 065-7926 AirPort Extreme Wi-Fi Card

Plus...

Dell 2408WFP Monitor

Yeah, I ordered RAM from Apple, but hey, it will be there from the get go and it really wasn't a huge difference in price once I factored in exchange rate.

Also went with the Dell monitor because as nice as the Apple LED screen is, I think I want a more "standard" monitor with multiple connections, cord options, tilt/swivel/height/rotate etc. I also use a Dell 2208 at work and I quite like it. Maybe someday when Apple brings out a monitor designed for Mac Pros instead of MacBooks, I might bite.

Now the waiting begins...

:D

I really think you should have got the 2.8GHz Core 2 Octo. The 2.6GHz Nehalem is fast yes but it isnt twice as fast. At double the price it is very hard to justify. You could have bought the 2.8GHz Octo and bought a much better system with the rest of the money in 2 years. From your needs it does not seem like you need the power of the Nehalem.

Well, the Mac Pro was delivered today and is sitting in it's box.

I'm really looking forward to hooking it up tonight and then over the next couple of days, installing Logic Studio on it and see just how fast this thing is compared to my G5 iMac. I'm sure I won't be disappointed.

I'll post my observations here once I get it all going.

MMMM unboxing a new toy! :)

I like to lock myself in my office, spread everything out on the floor and drink beer while I'm unboxing new toys! :D
