How about previous gen 2.4GHz MBP with 9600GT? That's ~1400$ from refurb store, it gives you the biggest bang for your buck.

Also, MBP with 9600GT will have higher resale value

It's the same as new ones but with 2.4GHz processor, it's great deal. You won't notice the 0.26GHz difference

Yeh it would probably be a good solution but the uk apple refurb store has nothing to offer, except a 2.66 a bit cheaper but it isn't cheaper actually because I have student discount on the mac I buy...

You mentioned the 9600 would have better resale value aswell - so that's another reason why its probably worth me aiming for the 2.66GHz
