I'll be heading to college by the time I look for a new notebook (right around Q1 or Q2 of 2010, hopefully it'll be a good time to buy then lol), and I'm thinking I'll go for another 15 inch MBP. I have one now from a few years back, and the size seems great. 17 could be nice but too big to carry around maybe. 13 might be too small for me. 15 was always the most ideal size to me, however by the time I look for a notebook next year I may find that I need different things, such as greater portability. But we'll see how things go then. lol If I do get the 15 inch MBP I could always get an external display as well. But then again I could get one for a 13 inch MBP as well... lol
I do believe 13" notebook are gaining the fastest in popularity compared to 15 and 17" notebooks.
The standard used to be and to a large degree still is "get a 15" notebook, it's the best all around computer"... That's changing I think, the fact that (nice) external displays are now much more affordable and that people more and more like using and taking their notebooks "everywhere" plus a smaller (13") notebook is much more comfortable to have on your laptop, 'grab and use', even just around the house it's much less cumbersome than 15" notebooks, yet you're getting a full size keyboard and good screen.
I've owned a 15" MBP and for me the little bit you gain in screen real estate isn't worth the extra weight on your lap or the extra space it takes up on your desk, plus the weight in your bag ... 13" = more enjoyable laptop experience, imo...
13" is going to outpace 15" very soon, even sooner for Apple with the new 13" MBP...

^ You bring up great points. I'll have to check out the way the 13 inch one really looks when I go to buy one as opposed to going straight for the 15 inch MBP. lol Either one is great for me but I tend to favor the size of the screen with 15 inches, but maybe the 13 inches will be enough for me too
13". Perfect size for portable needs - I choose my BlackBook over a Pro years ago for that very reason. Would have bought a 13" Pro if I could have.
I also adore the 17". To me, the 15" is a strange compromise, and doesn't do either job well enough. Too big to be truly portable, but not enough screen resolution to be a proper desktop replacement. If I were looking for a machine bigger than a 13", I would go straight to the 17"... anyone else feel the same?

I am the 13" 2.26GHz Macbook Pro.
This gives me the portability for when I travel or go to school. Plus the price is so fair. Since I do not dorm, I wanted extreme portability.
And all the money I am saving from not dorming will make my desktop solution, by buying an LED Cinema Display.
I will probably keep my old MBP at home most of the time now. Need to show off the new one, haha!
