Both displays looks great. I've seen both. I'm curious though, how many of you that prefer the over saturation look of the Note 8 actually calibrate your TV after purchasing it new? I bet you majority of you prefer the Vivid picture setting that comes with it out of the box because most assumed this looks great. In reality this picture setting is not accurate and the TV needs to be calibrated, which usually ends up less vivid and leans towards the warmer side to properly display colors accurately and to have a more realistic representation of the object on screen. Since I like my screens TVs, Monitors, Phones more natural and accurate, iPhone X is the clear winner for my use.

actually after using iphone X for a week, i don't find the screen to be much of a difference to my iphone 7 screen even though it is OLED

All you’ll get are opinions. Others may not share the same opinion as you. The proof is in the people who say they actually prefer the LCD screens or don’t notice a difference.

When comparing the two devices you mentioned it’s impossible to give an answer. I prefer the iPhone’s colour accuracy but I don’t hate the saturated appearance of the Galaxy screens either.

This was the exact analogue I was thinking of hearing all this vibrant vs. natural talk. TV's that aren't calibrated in the home keep the showroom setting of just making it as bright and saturated as possible in relatively bright conditions. Not surprisingly, it seems like Samsung calibrates differently for their phones in choosing to have the vivid colors. Apple went with the natural, accurate approach. Neither is better than the other in that regard, just a preference. Even the reviews that state one is objectively better than another depend on the definition of "better". Both great screens, too bad phones can't be tuned like TV's to set it to one's own preferences and/or conditions. People who are claiming one is hands down/different levels better are talking out of their arses since they are using very similar tech. iPhone 8 and prior generations are using different tech with different advantages and disadvantages. OLED clearly has more advantages, but it doesn't mean the LED's don't look better to one's tastes and certain conditions. Latest gen Samsungs and iPhones are top of the heap from most things I've read. The rest is preference and splitting hairs.

Well the note 8 has a higher resolution than iPhone X hands down. I feel that for those that want a display that looks beautiful yet natural iPhone X is better. For those that want a display that really pops and is eye catching go with the note 8. It’s preference really.

Anyone who says the iphone X is either lying, trolling, in denial or delused.

Really? I think the same can be said for you comment. This is about preference. If you want Over saturated unrealistic colors that “pop”, the Note 8 is your choice. If you want more natural and muted colors, then the X is your choice. Both are just as sharp, ones just more saturated. I will take natural all day. Can’t stand the Over blown unrealistic colors of the galaxy phones.

I have and use both, and here they are side by side:

So, a few things here:

-Both of them are subject to the panel lottery that affects all mass-produced consumer electronics.
-Both have auto-brightness enabled.
-The iPhone X here is being shot with true tone and night shift both turned off.
-The Note 8 is being shot in 'basic' display mode without any of the other display settings enabled or tuned.

Comparing the two, I observe that:

-While the iPhone X looks "whiter" in the first shot, you can see in the second and third that the display pushes to pink at angles, while the Note 8 remains more consistent. This is important to me, and the primary issue I have with the X: color shifting occurs at a far narrower angle than on the Note 8. Even at extreme angles, the Note 8 remains consistently more uniform.

-When holding both phones as one would do when, say, reading texts or email, the bottom part of the iPhone X's screen looks brighter and whiter than the center and top when compared to the Note 8. This is visually distracting to me because it creates almost a mock 'backlight bleed' effect even though I know it's not possible. It's just how I'm interpreting the color shift phenomenon.

-When not compared they're both great displays. I haven't yet seen an X screen that does not shift white color temperature when viewing at different angles, though those unicorns apparently exist; for me, it's not worth hours on the phone/chat or in the store swapping at the chance for something better.

Keep in mind ^ are my subjective opinions and yours may differ from what you see in the photos, which is totally 100% cool. 🙂

I think it just comes down to preference at the end of the day. Both displays are great. As far as the resolution, the Note 8 has a bigger screen than the X and perhaps the extra ppi is really not needed in the X. I’m sure there’s a point when the extra ppi is really not needed when holding and viewing the phone and normal distance. I expect the X Plus next year to have a higher resolution than this current X model.

To Each its Own....I just cant stand Over saturation (cartoonish looking) ...It looks ridiculous.....Majority of the general public love that vivid mode, thats why those crappy LCD Samsung TV are selling great.

I didn't like 128Kb MP3, don't like stupid filters on camera phone pictures, don't like LCD TV full stop, and most definitely don't like the vivid setting on a TV. So the Note 8 or any Samsung Phone screen is out for me instantly...I just doesn't look natural, it doesn't look like the world around me when I see it.

Besides the iPhone X runs iOS 😉 I prefer the iPhone X with Truetone enabled...

I've compared the screens side by side in a store and I prefer the iPhone X display. It might very well be confirmation bias, but I actually don't like excessively saturated colors. The "Samsung palette", as I like to call it, is just too vivid for me, too unnatural.

So kudos to Apple for getting screen calibration just right.

Unlike you, I am neutral (sorry but anyone who has mac in his/her nic has to have their opinion treated with some caution when giving an opinion on anything Apple versus anything else). I am an iphone user but I am not gonna let that affect any opinion I give.

But it's more than that. I checked the N8 and iX one after the other and it's true, the N8 screen just pops out at you. It is arguably the best display I have ever seen on a hand held device. The iX display was good but nowhere near as wow, less nits and less pixels. So in all weather and in all conditions, the N8 screen is superior. And by a significant margin. I would argue they are not even in the same league. Tier 1 and on its own: N8. Tier 2: iX and anyone else who has a similarly good dislay.

For the record, you can adjust the settings on the N8 screen so the colours aren't saturated.

Samsung made the iX screen too, don't forget that. Yea Apple set the specs but no way known Samsung would agree to put better displays on their competitor's devices. Perhaps Samsung gave Apple their 3 year old batch of displays. Just saying. Because honestly, seriously, the N8 display looks 3 years ahead of the iX.

No contest, the N8 in a canter.

I personally like the x better. Samsung’s always seem way to saturated and un-real to me

There are 4 color modes you can choose from in Samsung Galaxy phones.
If you like natural, you can choose "Basic" mode or in adaptive mode turn the red+green saturation to minimum.

Galaxy gives you option to customize to your preference. Iphone doesnt which is big minus.

Can we compare both since they are using different display panel? On my iPhone 8 and even the iPad Pro 10.5 with True Tone On , the X is more yellow.

Actually, the iPhone X uses a Samsung OLED panel. It's just tuned and manufactured to Apples specifications.

Thanks!

You guys just save me a 104-mile trip(208 miles roundtrip). I was actually considering going to my nearest Apple Store to compare my current Note 8 to the new iPhone X. 🙂
Umm, you are going to be swayed by people on a forum?! lol

Define "better". Do you want a bright, vivid, over-saturated screen that "looks good", or do you want a screen that has objectively good colour accuracy and is tuned to near ISF calibration standards? Both "look good" but what do you prefer? Personally I prefer accuracy and something that's easy on the eyes.

Did you forget that the note 8 has a few settings to tone down the saturation? Guess you didn’t. Before we start sounding off, maybe we should do a little research first In what it can and cannot do or has or doesn’t have.
