You should try out that Garage Band Jam Session while you have all of those iPads!

Interestingly, my new iPad is the same build week and factory as yours (week 7, DN factory) and the screen is excellent. I did look at the backlighting on a black screen and the bleed is so minimal that I would never notice it in normal use.

Some people really have the expendable cash to buy 4 iPads at once?

Even if he bought 4 of the most expensive iPads ($829), that comes up to $3300 or so. It's not like he's paying for a Mercedes in full with cash. What, do you spend your entire paycheck right when you get it?

OP, I'd keep on the one on the right. Hardly noticeable in daily usage situations if, like most people, you keep the brightness at around 50%.

while I've kind of accepted that light bleed is a reality with LCD screens, which is why my TV is plasma btw, will this form factor ever be really great in terms of bleed? or will it need to progress to micro-plasma format or something?

I've got an iPad2 and try and ignore the edges if I watch something dark.
How did the OP set up this test? what app gives you a uniform black screen and still allows to turn the brightness right up? flashlight?

wow I feel sorry for you. I have never had bad luck when it came to receiving an Apple product. All of mine have been perfect. (iPhone 4, 4S, iPad 2, iPad 3, Macbook Pro early 2011, Apple TV2, Apple TV3)

????

You say that as if everyone makes $3300 in a single paycheck. Looking at avg. American income I would find that hard to believe. Especially the way people whine about how expensive the iPad is and therefore it should be flawless.

Why is it any of your business how much the OP has spent on iPad or how much he has purchased with credit? Even if it was anyone's business, obviously he does not plan on keeping them all. I think it is way smarter than the return and replace game.

I've opened up 4 iPads today and these 3 are the best of the bunch. Which of the three would you guys suggest keeping? Or should I return them all and try my luck again?

Somehow the thumbnail is rotated 180degree than the full image.

The left ipad becomes the right etc

I will return today and try my luck one more round. Truth to be told, I do feel extremely bad for buying multiple iPads and having to return them. I understand there is a lot of underpriviledged Chinese workers building these things (I myself is Chinese fyi), thus I was hesitant to exchange or even post here for that matter. But as I've been reading all the people who claim 'perfect' iPad, I wanted to see what you guys thought from the ones I have.

Keep you all posted.

There's nothing to feel bad about, someone will gladly be buying the iPads you return. You shouldn't be having to do this in the first place. Apple will make profit either way, and it has nothing to do with the Chinese workers.

I didn't make it my business. I was only responding to what one poster had written above about who has money to purchase 4 ipads and I quoted the response.

I could care less what the OP or anyone else spends on iPads. I just found it ironic how on one side people complain about how expensive iPads are and on the other, one poster makes it seems as though buying 4 iPads is no big deal.

But that's just it, the person is not buying 4 iPads... he is returning almost immediately those he does not want and is likely simply using a credit card (as in, no money out of pocket).

The left-most one looks pretty good. I'm not sure if you'll be able to do any better based on the pictures I've seen around the web.

I have yet to see a perfectly even backlight on any iPad...or any device for that matter.

I'll happily be corrected if anyone can present evidence to the contrary.

Why are people so concerned to comment about how much "expendable cash" others have? I see this time after time here. The last one I read was "if you pay the extra $129 for a 4G iPad you have money to burn."

Seriously (to those who it applies), sure sounds like jealousy or envy or those making the comments SOUND LIKE young kids who buy their toys with a $5/week allowance and have nothing left after that other than mommy and daddy for income.

Some people EARN A LIVING and may make more or less than others and it's really no ones business what we do with our money or to judge others for spending their own money as they like. That's the one thing I really dislike about this board, there are just too many kiddies living off allowances or just mommy and daddy that it turns this place into a playground with constant sniveling and whining.

Like others have said, this isn't an iPad issue, but a screen tech issue. Shoot edge lit led backlit LCD displays are the worst. But all LCD displays have similar issues. If you want a perfectly uniform backlight going to get a plasma. Or a new sharp elite.

If you own a LCD/Led tv, do the same test. Display a black image, turn down the room lights, and crank up the backlight. I best 85-90% of you would have backlight bleed.

The one on the left looks great. If everything else on it is good (pixels, colors, etc) KEEP it.

Seriously, how often would you have the brightness (backlight) set to 100%? Probably only outside on a bright day. And would you be watching a movie with black bars in those conditions? Probably not. And even if so, it is so bright out you wont notice the bleed.

If you are watching movies with the backlight set to 100% in a dark room, that will kill your eyes.
