I just got a MBP 13" It is going to replace my MBP 15". Before that I had a PB G4 15"

My MBP 15" was/is a great machine, but it is 3.5 years old - time to upgrade.

I was going to go with a 15", but a buddy of mine told me to really take a look at the 13". I went to the Apple store and compared them all. The 13" seemed like it was good enough.

The 13" is cheaper (the machine, applecare, etc).
I almost never use the laptop screen - I plug it into a monitor at work and home.
I like the smaller footprint.

The jury is still open, but so far I like it.

One thing to consider - get a firewire 400 to 800 converter. I had to use gige to move my files over. Firewire would have been better.

The glossy screen is not as bad as I thought. I have the matte on my 15".

With the new imac 27", I figured the savings would go towards a 27" imac. I am still debating using the mini display in or just using screen share.

D.

17" really is a niche product

Wow, with 104 votes tallied the 17" MBP appears to be grabbing only about 13.5% of sales. I knew it was the low volume model in the MBP line when I bought my 17" a few weeks ago but I would have guessed maybe 20% with the 13" & 15" each grabbing ~ 40%. I guess big "desktop replacement" laptops are truly a niche product. I'm surprised Apple doesn't differentiate more with price and features in the big-uns to drive even more margin with buyers who may be pretty price elastic. i.e. if you need a big screen and portability then you need it.

I personally love the 15 inch. My first Apple machine was the first CoreDuo 15". I've two more since then. I tried a 17 for a little while, then I tried a MacBook Air, but ultimately found the 15 to be the best fit for me. I felt as though it was quite portable for a 15" laptop. I will I'm sure continue to buy the 15" for a while!

I got the 13in MBP because I was seriously looking at getting a MBA, I also wanted a 15in MBP  so this was the best compromise. I originally wasn't going to get a 13in MB because I hated the screens, but on the newer ones I find them acceptable. Basically this was cheaper then the two which was a big deal for me, also more portable then the 15in and more powerful and longer battery life then the MBA (I couldn't stand having only 2GB of RAM and I wasn't crazy about the small HDD).

went with the 13 because the 15 was just too expensive and i didnt need the higher level hardware. I really wanted the 15 but couldnt justify the extra cost... since i bring it to grad school a lot the portability is great...

After picking up a 12" netbook for cheep, I've been using that as my main portable computer for note taking, but for lounging around the house my 15" screen is starting to feel a bit small....

I'd like a 17", maybe when I can find a matte unibody 17" for cheep in a few years...

15 & 13. Thought I'd give the 15 a shot again after the Air but it was too big for my sickly, weak & puny arms to carry.

Got the 13 & love it except for massive black bezel & glassy screen covering.

I bought the 15" because I work in the FCS suite and PS a lot and the 15" packs the balance between power, screen real estate and portability. Plus, at the time I bout my MBP, there was only a 15 and 17 inch pro.

17'' and loving it.

I had a 15'' SR MBP before this one, and a large part of my decision was the desire to keep a matte screen since I have little to no control over my lighting conditions.

I love the resolution (I set it up with my 23'' ACD and I can run Rhino in one and Grasshopper in the other---Great!), battery life (ridiculously better than my SR MBP), speakers (I know that seems like a tribbling little point, but usable speakers on a laptop is kinda a unique/cool thing). I like the thin bezel, and if I had any reservations about the whole black/silver bezel thing, I am completely over it by now. Also I actually USE my expresscard slot ( I have a sony camera, therefore memory sticks not SD) so I like having that aswell.

Its not really that heavy, but I did have to upgrade to a bigger bag (The larger BOOQ Boa Nerve...which is a champion of a bag.

I got the 15" because a 17" laptop looks completely laughable to me. I know I'm not alone here. I see people pull them out of a backpack and it looks like a magic trick. I understand the appeal for graphic artists maybe but I think it's such a niche thing to need so much power and resolution and then need it to be "kinda portable" to the point where a desktop is out of the question. That being said I wish I could get everything I need or might need into a 13" but I can't so I ended up in the middle and am very happy with it.

I want a 17 inch precisely because of those reasons. Some people want to travel light, others want to live light.
