I have to agree that the mbp has been the most unreliable laptop I have owned. Fan problems and not to mention easily scratched. LED screen light breaking * 2. I think that it's the nature of being so thin. Aluminum is a soft metal, so it dents but doesn't break, but it's majorly unsightly. I'm not too pleased with the reliability. Then again, I think that Apple brings these high expectations onto themselves b/c of their higher prices and their inflammatory advertising. Have you noticed that they love to use evocative language more than other companies? Like amazing this and that...if you pay more and say that it's alot better, they are responsible for living up to the elevated expectations. Had I paid $650 for my notebook, I for one would not notice the reliability issues.

I've always had good experiences with Apple. My 12" PowerBook is still chugging along fine, being dropped from time to time, and is good aside from a few little dings and scratches. Usually whenever there's an issue with the design of the machines, Apple infuriates you by saying the issue doesn't exist, then just as you're about to give up, admits fault and offers free replacements for defective parts (here's looking at you, PowerBook lower RAM slots and plastic MacBook palmrest edges!). If you wanna stay in the PC world, Lenovo is the way to go. The ThinkPad isn't as good as it was under IBM anymore, but they're still extremely good.

hmmm...still not quite convinced, does anyone know of any statistic online that shows which laptops is most durable?

Ok i can not give you stats but here is prove that i have seen time and time again. How many laptops do you see out there that are 5 years old and still can compete with the new tech.

None.

Except mac's. I can not tell you how many pages and how many people i know that own mac book's or towers or iMac's that are more than 5 years old and they are still going strong and all they ever need are some minor updates. Like the OS and maybe ram if you want it.

I have friends that say mac's last 5 years and in my experience Pc's last two. And the PC needs to be updated weekly and maintained relentlessly. I had many PC's before is switched and the one i loved the most was a Voodoo and if you know what that means, you know it is a good computer. In fact HP just bought Voodoo. But i paid 7K for this laptop and it lasted me 2 years and then it was out dated and could not keep up with the new tech at all. If you want strength and durability go with a mac.

They are made from aluminum and all the components are top of the line. If you want a company / server type of computer buy PC they are cheaper and more Software for them. But if you want longevity and overall performance without dealing with windows. Go MAC.

MAC all the way. NO viruses. That to me is the seller right there.

my crappy old dell inspiron has taken some hard hits with no problem. If mine took those hits- it would be totaled. The only thing that makes mac is the os.

OP, if you're already spending $2500+ on a new MBP, why not spend a couple hundred dollars more to ensure it's coverage in case there is a problem? These are large investments, so you should insure them properly.

The reason why I wouldn't buy a HP laptop is because I dont like Vista

The reason why I wouldn't buy a Macbook is because I dont want to buy applecare.

Then it comes down to whether not having to use Vista is worth the cost of AppleCare for you.

I suppose what you're really asking is whether MBP is more likely to fail than HP laptop. It's hard to answer without statistics, but I would venture a guess it isn't. AppleCare is widely recommended not because your Mac is likely to break, but because it'll cost you a lot if it does.

sorry if I missed it somewhere, but does your work exclude using Linux? Ubuntu is a pretty popular variant at the moment. It will work on a HP and it's not Vista, and you don't have to buy applecare.

I got a 17" and the build quality and design is way better than anything I've seen with widows computers.

Hold on .... Aren't you the one whose had to return his 17" FOUR times ?
I thought I read one of your posts just the other day about something wrong again on your latest replacement
