Well, I got my MBP 13" 2017 and one major annoyance I have currently is that when it is unplugged from it's USB-C/TB to HDMI adapter (so I can run 4K / 60 Hz on my Samsung TV), the TV does not detect any signal and reverts back to normal, non-PC mode (which loses my 4:4:4 Chroma and looks way worse).

I don't expect anyone to have a definitive answer for me, but does anyone think that it is possible this could be rectified if I were to use a TB3 dock and have the USB-C to HDMI plugged in there as it would retain power (and maybe signal) without the computer? If anyone has any thoughts it would be greatly appreciated...

Anyone running the TS3 or other docks on High Sierra yet? Curious to know if they work any better, especially because Apple was apparently furiously patching TB-related bugs in 10.12.6. Would be great if I could use my eSata ports!

TS3 Lite: No problems so far, but I did not have problems in Sierra as well.

Would love to see Apple improve their third party Thunderbolt 3 support. For all the hype and effort that goes into Apple making the decision to go only TB3 ports, they better damned well ensure the experience is at least equivalent to the standards which are being replaced (DisplayPort and USB 3, for example).

I really do anticipate High Sierra improving overall Thunderbolt 3 support given the new integrations with eGPUs for example, however I am not one to leap to the Betas so I'm purely speculating.

My biggest gripe with TB3 at this point is how (poorly) Mac OS handles the re-establishment of a connection to any TB3 device upon waking from a period of sleep. This is something I've experienced with both CalDigit and Elgato docks. It doesn't actually ruin any functionality, it's just frustrating that expensive equipment like this takes 10 seconds to truly establish a solid connection to my MacBook. I think it's more poor event-handling on Mac OS's part honestly.

A question to users with 15" MBP owners who have used the OWC with 60w of charging. Will there be a big difference in charging times, and will there be cases of high loads where the battery will drain?

For me, the OWC a provides all the ports I need, and I often keep my laptop plugged in so it is often at 100%. I don't do video editing and probably my highest load will be exporting edited photos from Capture One Pro. Will the OWC be suitable for me?

Thanks!

I use my 15" plugged into it all day and power stays at 100% under heavy load with Adobe products.

If your battery is low and needs to charge, charge time is slightly slower than the standalone charger but you don't notice it unless you're staring at the battery indicator. Just work as normal and then it'll be charged before you know it.

I just got an Elgato Thunderbolt 3 Dock, works perfectly as advertised. I even connect a USB-C to HDMI 4K@60Hz Alt DP cable to it, not a glitch.

Anyone seen this NEW one!

Personally, it's not for me. But it may be for others here, hence me adding it to the thread.

Recently picked up a 2017 15" MBP and the Belkin TB 3 Express Dock. Everything seems to run great so far (fingers crossed, still testing). I have 2 1440p Dell 27" monitors and a handful of USB devices hooked up. Powers/charges the MBP perfectly.

Some minor lag when connecting to dock for the first time. Sleep/wake while plugged in works great.

I really wish Henge Docks had faster R&D. I'd fork over the cheese for THIS one in a heartbeat!

Bumping the thread. So I've had the OWC TB3 dock since it was released and it has now developed an issue that makes me want to toss it in the trash. I bring my MBP TB home each night and when I plug it in the morning, nothing attached to the dock works. The power lights are on and I can see the battery charge indicator on the screen on my Mac, but...nothing. It takes literally 10-15 minutes to get it to wake up. Unplugging the power and letting it sit and plugging it back. Unplugging every device attached to it. Rebooting my laptop. Eventually if I repeat these enough, the dock suddenly awakes and works the rest of the day with no issues. There is no rhyme or reason to what wakes it up. I've tried different cables and it is getting worse. Opened a support ticket with OWC last week and as others have reported, they never got back to me.

Don't know if something is slowly failing but I'm less than thrilled with this dock and am really annoyed that OWC doesn't answer their support tickets.

Did you try different MBP and different ports? it sounds like a defective unit. Contact OWC and get a replacement.
Mine is from Caldigit's, TS3 Thunderbolt 3 dock. It's been working very well. I like the 85W charging and dual 4K/60Hz support while all other TB3 docks can only do 60W and very buggy on 4K/60 support. IMHO. the build quality of Caldigit's TS3 dock is at world class levels.

I had a similar experience with my OWC dock. I ended up returning it and getting a similar device from Pluggable, and it's worked like a charm. It doesn't have an SD card slot (or a Firewire 800, if you're into that), and it's also limited to 60W charging, but it suits my needs just fine - and is $50 cheaper to boot.

LOL, Henge docks has been saying they were going to be releasing their stuff soon for a year now.

They never responded to my support email so I contacted them by support chat and they agreed to replace it. Hopefully the replacement lasts long than the original...

Anyone try the one from Startech yet? Seems to get pretty good reviews on Amazon.

Looks good but with the same money, you can get OWC's one or Caldigit's one and they have more ports than others.

My Caldigit TS3 has been awesome. Can't say the same for the Elgato TB3 I had before it.

YES, that's my findings too. So far only Caldigit's TS3 can handle 4K/60Hz properly, no screen flash, and works pretty well with 85W charging.

Pretty awful that most of these docks are bad performing. Even after ~14 months of TBolt 3 being around.

OWC isn't even upfront about there docks actually functionality. Poor show.

I am confused... I had a Verbatim Thunderbolt 3 dock, (I returned the Verbatim since it was at the end of the time period for returning it) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075ZTQ895/ which is small and has a couple ports and says it is able to pass through to a 4K monitor at 60Hz just fine, although I have not tried yet since I do not have a 4K monitor. But then reading many of your opinions of Caldigits TS3 and now TS3 Plus which are very good reviews of it indeed, I thought why would they want to spend $150-$300 for a larger bulkier dock when they can have the Verbatum for $75 and it travels well? I understand there are more ports, but is that all, or am I missing something? I am not trying to be snarky, I just really want to know. It is a confusing time now owning a 2017 MBP 15" and needing all these other things to hook it up. The Caldigit TS3 Plus is very enticing right now since it is $100 off for pre order and they will give you an extra year on the warranty. But it's big!

Also, I am an artist and need to work on photographs so I am thinking of buying the new LG 34UK95U https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1382968-REG/lg_34wk95u_34_nano_ips.html or the LG 32UK950 https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1382967-REG/lg_32uk950_32_nano_ips.html Both of these have a few ports on the back as well and will charge my MBP, yes only @ 60watts I know, but it makes the question of which dock to get more confusing.

Any insight to this expensive endeavor would be appreciated...TIA

It depends on what you need. If it has enough ports and you don't have a case on your laptop than it might work for you. I keep a case on my MBP TB, have two 4K monitors attached to it (one via mini display port and the other with an HDMI to USB C connector) and regularly use a lot of USB ports so it wouldn't work for me.

Thank you. So really, other then something like the Caldigit having more ports, there is no real difference between it and the small Verbatim?

Umm, there is a huge difference between the Verbatim and the Caldigit TS3. For one, the Caldigit is a real dock, and not just a port expansion. You can have up to two 4k monitors or 1 5k monitor with the TS3. With the display port! And all of those ports being used with just one TB cable. Also charging your MBP with 85w of power at the same time! I also have a similar portable one like yours that I carry with me. It doesn't have ethernet interface, or anything like my TS3, but it is all I need when on the go. An actual dock makes your laptop a desktop when you are home or at work to hook up external keyboards, monitors, etc with one cable.

Man, I didn't know they had the TS3 plus now. Bummer. Must be why they had the TS3 on special to clear out the stock, with the Air Pro 2, and now they released it after that.
