Umm, there is a huge difference between the Verbatim and the Caldigit TS3. For one, the Caldigit is a real dock, and not just a port expansion. You can have up to two 4k monitors or 1 5k monitor with the TS3. With the display port! And all of those ports being used with just one TB cable. Also charging your MBP with 85w of power at the same time! I also have a similar portable one like yours that I carry with me. It doesn't have ethernet interface, or anything like my TS3, but it is all I need when on the go. An actual dock makes your laptop a desktop when you are home or at work to hook up external keyboards, monitors, etc with one cable.

Man, I didn't know they had the TS3 plus now. Bummer. Must be why they had the TS3 on special to clear out the stock, with the Air Pro 2, and now they released it after that.

Thanks for the answer. I guess that is the answer to have a TS3 and a Verbatum, or something like it, to travel with. That is one bummer that the Verbatum does not have an Ethernet port.
So can I ask, If I did have a 4K or 5K monitor that had a Thunderbolt port, would I use that from the TS3 or the Display Port?

Yes, there is a sale on for the new TS3 Plus for $100 off plus they add a second year on the warranty ;)

Thank you. So really, other then something like the Caldigit having more ports, there is no real difference between it and the small Verbatim?

All the so called Thunderbolt 3 hub with two little male usb-c connectors are not real thunderbolt 3. It's just a USB device, and they can only do 5G. Hyperdrive, Verbatim and all the similar ones are not real thunderbolt 3. It's just USB-C.

They are trying to put Thunderbolt 3 on the product description, and trying to mislead people to think they can buy a cheap thunderbolt 3 hub. There are many people on kickstarter complaining about such usb-c hub damaged their laptop's thunderbolt 3 ports, and lots of people complained about their hub stopped charging. So buyers be aware.

If you do the math yourself, you won't have enough power to provide to all the usb ports on this hub, and to charge the laptop a 85W and provide power to the rest of ports on the laptop, like other 3 thunderbolt ports. if you plug all the devices to the hub, and to your laptop's ports, the rest of power will be 20W or 30W to charge your laptop. that is very slow or you will see your laptop discharge slowly.

The real thunderbolt 3 dock like Belkin or Caldigit are using at least 160W power supply, that is the right choice.

I have tried some of these small hubs and sold them on ebay since it's not designed for me and I saw the mechanical design problem which will kill my thunderbolt 3 ports eventually. :(

Thanks for the enlightenment Carestudio. Kinda sucks that they can use Thunderbolt 3 to describe these small devices that are not really T3...

Yeah, they told me I can send back my TS3 and AV Pro 2 if I want to get the TS3 plus, I was like, not worth it. I asked them how much to just get the TS3 plus for my TS3, and they wouldn't respond. Oh well.

If the monitor actually has a TB port, use it instead. But, display port usually is the port you want to use over hdmi or others.
