I'm going to be getting my MBP as soon as the back to school deal starts. Just wondering in advance which version of Windows I should purchase to get the most out of my MBP hardware. I've only ever used XP 32 bit so I am not familiar with the uses of 64bit OS's or of Vista or the new 7. Which windows OS would you all recommend?

Thanks in advance for clarifying.

Nevah evah evah put Vista 64 on any Mac that isn't a Mac Pro. Vista 64 will set your MBP on fire.

Definitely go with Windows 7.

maybe something is wrong with mine but the 64bit Windows 7 takes up 15GB on my 50GB partition.

EDIT: i guess i should say that this is in response to people saying that it doesnt take up a lot of room.

Not to rain on the Win7 bandwagon, but some people have corporate apps that won't be supported on Win7 until it becomes commercial. If you don't have this constraint, go for the freebie -- me, I'm stuck with XP for now (we never upgraded to Vista). It's bad enough having to run one instance of Windows on a Mac so I'm not going to set up a second one just to play with Win7.

I have 7 on my computer, and I really like it...
runs way better then vista...

It definitely has a more attractive UI and I like the taskbar much more than Vista's, but it's not very stable. I've had a lot of BSODs that have caused the computer to reboot, something I've hardly ever encountered with Vista 64-Bit.

I tried to use it for work and I had to switch back to Vista 64 because it simply wasn't stable enough. I assume it's related to third-party drivers, as the companies simply aren't transferring much of its manpower to Windows 7 drivers yet.

For casual and infrequent use, Windows 7 RC should be fine though. I have the 64-bit version installed on my MBP via Boot Camp.

I just installed Vista Home Basic on my month old MBP.

The install went fine with Boot Camp. I did get one blue-screen error when Boot Camp was running setup.exe for the first time in Vista. But it restarted and I re-ran Boot Camp's setup (it just installs drivers that Windows needs) and no problems there.

The only issue I am running into is how hot my MBP gets while running Vista. I'm looking around for solutions to that and it seems the best thing to do is to install some software that gives more control with the fans. How hot? Well it seems pretty hot. I installed Half Life 2 and tried it out... the game runs great but it really gets hot. You can feel the heat underneath the keyboard, particularly up around the top left (where F1 key is). I guess that is where the video card is. I read that Vista chooses to run the higher-end video card and there is no way to switch that.

I don't *think* it's hot enough to be damaging to the hardware, but that is just a guess. I will be researching and finding out more that's for sure.

If I could go back and install XP Pro instead, yeah I think I would like to try that just to see if there is any difference with this heat. Office Max near me has a clearance on copies of XP Pro... Hmmmm

It's good to see people trying out the Windows 7 RC, but personally I don't like the time bomb in it. I reinstall Windows once every year, but using Windows 7 would push my wipe clean install time a little too early.

I've seen Vista 64 run incredibly well. After all of their updates and hot fixes Vista is doing a lot better now, but with the imminent release of 7 I don't want to waste money on an older product.

Use what you have now. If what I hear is true 7 will be out before Christmas (early I know).
