My guess is that most apps will be smaller than typical mp3's, some much smaller. Small apps will be smaller than tunes, and big apps will be smaller than movies.

So basically you have to decide if you want a big music collection or movies on your iPhone. If you want to watch feature length movies, then maybe a 16 GB will be more appropriate. If not 8 GB should last awhile.

I am a technophile, but I just don't think I can justify getting the 16GB. I see many people who complain about no 32 GB, but I just don't see the significant use for me. I only carry about 2 GB of music and would much rather browse the internet than watch movies on the iPhone. I shrink my pictures down to 640x480 range. I wouldn't expect apps to be much greater than 10 MB each, so even if I downloaded 200 apps, that's 2 GB.

I am upgrading from a 4 GB iPhone; so 8 GB to me is more than I use.

On one hand, I cannot see myself ever using more than 8 GB, but on the other, there's no turning back after this selection.

Can anyone help me justify the $100 for the 16 GB?
Im feeling the same way you do. I have a 30gb ipod that has at the most 4gb of music on it (waste, I know) which half the songs I dont even listen to, And I cant see myself having more than a 1-2 movies on it for when I travel than delete after.
This is the way I see it for me:

2gb- music (just get the songs I really like on it instead of an entire album)

1-2gb- 1-2 movies at a time (how much does the average full length movie use?)

1gb-pictures (Im sure I wont even get close to that but..)

3gb-for apps (Im excited about this feature but will that apps really take up that much space?)

This will be my first iphone so if anyone can help me point out something Im missing I would appreciate it.

It's tough to say. I agree that technophobes will likely want to get the cheapest option at $199. However, I think many might reason that the 16GB version is cheaper than the current 8GB, so why not? Some will likely say that they have no reason to spend an extra $100, while others might ask themselves what is another $100? In my opinion, I think the 16GB will win out on launch, with the 8GB catching up later.

I would say there's a large group who'll be going for the 16GB just to get it in white. I know one of my coworkers wanted a new iPhone, and when I mentioned it came in white, she was ready to sign right up. Macbook-matching-white.

And as for being a technophile, I always feel compelled to go with the bigger model. You never know when you'll need 8GB of free space for...something.

Size, sometimes, does matter. :)

this is very close to my intended storage usage and I will be getting an 8gb as well. for me, i wont use the iphone as an ipod so much. my primary uses will be internet, phone, email, and gps mapping. the only app i can think of that would be rather large is a realtime mapping app like tomtom, which could take 1-2 gb for the maps...but perhaps they will have provisions where you only have to load certain map areas that you need.

something i was curious about is if itunes could eventually allow streaming to the iphone from your home pc. this would allow you to have your music anywhere you have 3g or wifi. it would drain the battery faster, but the storage potential would be almost unlimited. i noticed the iphone remote checkbox in the unreleased itunes screenshot so maybe they will include this functionality eventually?

I agree that the 8GB will probably sell faster. I came from a 30GB video iPod, down to a 2nd gen 8GB nano, then to an 8GB iPhone; despite having more than 30GB worth of content, I learned to manage my music to switch down to the nano, and my 8GB iPhone has about 5GB free right now. That said, I'll probably buy the 16GB, lol. I really don't need that much more of my content with me, but I was expecting the 3G 8GB to be 399 before it was announced, so for $100 less than I was planning on spending, I'll do the 16. I would guess that for many people, it's about price point for platform entry. How many people pony up the extra money to move to the bigger HDD MB/MBP? Certainly some people do, but I would guess that most laptop buyers opt for the entry model to get the machine they want, since in most cases, the next step storage wise is considerably more expensive.

8GB is all anyone needs. anything more and you're probably borderline obsessive about carrying EVERYTHING you have on one device...only to actually use about 10% of it over all.

LOL! so true. I guess its mainly the apps that I'm worried about but maybe only 10% of the apps will be worth downloading.

exactly. out of all the apps, let's just say only 50% are cool and worthy of your hard earned $$. now, out of that 50%, how many will require a ton of space to install? probably none.

i really think 8gb will be fine for almost every single person, but if anyone has a version 1, 16gb iphone, and has used up most of that space....please, share with us all what you have on your phone? I can't even imagine people putting over 10gb of music and actually listening to it all.

Okay, I confess. I filled my 8 gig iPhone up with George Lopez and Forenzic Files rips. I like watching TV on my phone and they average 150 MB apiece

I was just concerned over the app sizes....I don't watch movies on mine and have mostly music and photos on it...so if apps are not going to be a concern then I'll go with the 8GB.

Probably the 8gb, its cheaper and thats what most people really care about. I will be buying a 16gb :D

16GB Black - Will absolutely fly of the shelves.

That's assuming they're released in July. If they aren't until Sept. like some rumors are saying, then the 8GB will be flying off the shelves.

EDIT: Crap! Someone else already made this point. *sigh*

The 16GB models will be available at launch.

There is no reason for them not to be.

I know, people are saying they are not going to be, but really,
we all know they are, which is all that matters.

The 16GB, if available - Will absolutely fly off the shelves

Mark my words.

8GB will outsell 16GB

It is silly to get 16GB when you know you at these prices of $199 and $299, you will be upgrading this same phone in 12 month for another $199 or $299 model. You know you are not keeping phones for more than 8-12 months right> unless you know you will absolutely keep this phone for 2 years, which, lets face it, with the speed of current technology, you won't, $199 version is a way to go. Unless of course money is no object and a $100 difference does not matter to you. But I know myself, I know this is not the phone I will keep for ages, it will be traded yet for some new exciting marvel that they will come up in a year, so I don't want to waste my money. 8GB should be enough for me.

I've been set for the 8gig one because I have an 80gb ipod already and I don't need to store much music on my phone. (I have a 1 gig phone now with 500megs stored) Do you think that apps will really be that big that a 16 gig will make a difference?

I mean, when you buy them, you can delete and redownload from the store I think if you're running low on space, but I can't imagine 8 gigs of apps on my phone unless they start getting really big. I guess the TomTom app is rumored at upwards of 1gig or so. Hmm... Maybe I will spring the extra 100 if it's still there.

I plan on getting a 16gb in white (unless I see it in the store and it looks horrible) that way it will hold most of the music I want to have with me and all of my apps. I think the 8gb and the 16gb will sell fairly evenly with the 16gb leading by a little. Most people might not understand why then need an extra 8 gbs and just not go there for another 100$.
