New TC as Wifi generator and Mac backup New Extreme as network extender. Old Express to give my stereo internet access.

I'm running a pair of the 802.11n AirPort Expresses - one is actually running the WiFi network and shares my printer, while the other acts as a both a bridge for a part of the apartment where I need an ethernet port and an AirPlay audio receiver. I previously used this pair for with one extending the other, but when I moved, I didn't need as much coverage.

Yes, but does AirPort Utility 5.6 support the newest routers made by Apple? Even if it does, how long do you think that will last, or how long will it be before they fully break OS X compatibility with 5.6?

Sooner than it will be before they add back the missing features to version 6, I'm sure, mostly because I don't think they ever will.

I am using an Asus RT-AC66U as my main router. I have an older 2TB TC setup for backups.

The one thing that is a bit of a bummer with this setup is that I can't use the "Guest" wifi setup on the TC. Apparently the TC needs to be the primary router, or running as a bridge to another Apple router, for the "Guest" wifi to function.

The RT-AC66U suports VLANs. Apple's "Guest" network is simply a separate VLAN from your regular home network (so they can't really see one another, and optionally, devices on the guest network can't even see each other). You can set up the same thing manually with the stock firmware on the Asus; otherwise Tomato or something will give you a nice GUI.

Or so I've heard. Never done it myself. :)

My setup comprises the ISP supplied modem / router which acts soley as a modem. This us connected to both my TC and my AirPort Extreme which is in the bedroom to extend range and also to connect a smart TV and Internet Radio as well as an AV amp.

All works well.

I replaced my old AirPort Extreme (N) with a new AirPort Extreme (AC).

Range increased. Performance seemed about the same unless I was closer to the router.

Then I got an Asus RT-AC68; this one has both good range and excellent performance.

It's got a ton of advanced features, though it does cost a pretty penny.

My ISP provides a piece of junk router that I have to set to bridge mode.

So the new Extreme isn't producing anything better than my older model? Good to know as I can't afford to replace it now....I'm concerned about the cylindrical design though....looks vulnerable to falling over.

Just recently turned in the cheapie Netgear N150 router that my cable company had furnished me and bought an Airport Extreme. I don't know if I got a bad one or not, but I was really disappointed in it. Had to reset the connection almost every day, if not every other day. Took it back and bought a Netgear Nighthawk R7000. Love this router!

I recently replaced my Airport Time Capsule (wireless N) with the new Airport Time Capsule (wireless AC) and for my AC clients, iMac and MacBook Pro I definitely see a performance increase. This is especially so on downloads and Time Machine backups. For my N clients, I can't really quantify it but they also seem to have benefitted.

If you are using N clients only you may not want to run out and buy one of the new ones unless you just want the latest and greatest or you need more storage from the upgraded Time Capsule models.

Belkin F9K1112 AC 1000 DB Wi-Fi Dual-Band AC+ Gigabit Router

It has 3 wifi signals broadcasting in our house. One is the main wifi, one is for guest only, and the other is just for media.

6th Gen Airport Extreme (with AirPort Utility 5.6.1) connected to ActionSuck Fios router via ethernet over power line adapter. Ordering MoCa adapter instead, having netflix streaming issues, and won't believe it's the retarded netflix throttling by Verizon, but time will tell.

Regardless, the only thing that irritates me about the AEBS is that I can't put a 'hosts' file directly on the router, I don't like updating on 3 computers, and not having the ability to do it on my non jailbroken iOS devices......

The range is a lot better. I mean a lot.

The performance is better too, just not that good compared to the Asus. At a good distance I can get 800 Mbps on my Asus, but the AirPort is already down to like 200 Mbps.

Anyways it's a lot harder to tip over than you think. In fact, unless you were to deliberately push it hard or kick it, I can't see it falling over.

Latest extreme here as well. With a 4TB external hooked up to it for Timemachine

Question about Asus and Maverick

Hi guys,

I just registered on this forum because it seems like there is a lot of knowledge here in case i would get troubles with my future Imac.
Here we go...get an Imac 27 inches being shipped and will receive it in the coming days, but i'm really confused about the routers solutions.
As i still have a very old Belkin G + Mimo router and get here today a new internet abo (200Mbps down / 10 Mbps up), i wanted to change my router for a newer one to welcome my Imac next week. the thing is i was hoping to can have access through the internet on my data when not being home. this said, i was thinking of the Asus RT-AC68U which can provide access on distance, with an external drive connected on USB 3.0 port or eventually get a NAS on my network (thought about the WD my cloud 3TB). now i see on the website of Asus that they are not supporting OSX 10.9 Maverick yet on the RT-AC68U , and just called the Asus support here in the Netherlands but the guy said that the 68U was not tested yet on Maverick and that Apple OS had no priority for them, they were testing more windows computers.
I noticed on this forum that some people are using Asus routers and I'm wondering if some people get issues on using de Asus RT-AC68U together with OSX 10.9 Maverick? and how is their backup done...through Time Machine? Does it work fine with maverick?
I'm mostly concerned on compatibility issues between an apple product and third party products.
I would eventually be interested in a Time Capsule 2TB but if i understood well, it doesn't support remote access when not being home. Got 2 Iphone 5 in the house, 1 Ipad mini and soon an Imac so a Time Capsule is may be a logical choice for the compatibility, but i also have a HP laptop running on Windows 7 professional and i would love to be able to access my home data from my laptop when not being home! Any suggestion please would be more than welcome...i'm lost now :confused: !!
Thanks everyone for your contribution on which hardware could make it all possible:)
