RedTomato, the Glenmorangie is pretty good. It's not too smokey and has a nutty taste to it.

There's a place in Munich called Islay that has the largest selection whiskys in Munich or something like that. Will probably take ages to try them all. ;) So I've got this thread as a start, heh.

The only whisky I could ever really like was Cardhu - and even that sat on my shelf for a while.

I love bourbon. I like Knob Creek and Bakers, but Pappy Van Winkle's family reserve (20 years) puts everything else to shame. Drink it neat.

Rye is pretty good too...

Personal favorite? 1792, hands down. My first bottle I received as a Christmas gift a couple of years ago. It's about $32 and surprisingly smooth. I also like Woodford Reserve and Gentleman Jack, though I find regular Jack to be offensive.

Well I guess it depends... I guess my choices would be
Jack Daniels for Mixing (love Jack and Coke!)
Lagavulin 16 yr old for a good, bold single malt scotch
Glenfiddich if I want a lighter single malt
Vat 69 for a blend (really good with Drambuie... a Rusty Nail is my sipin' drink :) )

I could go on, but I'll leave it at that.

Yet another vote for Talisker and Laphoraig.

I've been exploring single malts pretty exclusively lately, so I haven't tried to many of the higher-end blendeds lately, e.g. the various colors of Johnny Walker. I should give 'em a go at some point.

On the bourbon side, I like Woodford Reserve and Maker's. I've tried a couple of ryes, but only in the form of Sazeracs: my current fave cocktail.

In San Francisco there's an excellent Japanese whiskey bar called Nihon. Nice atmosphere, great food, amazing selection of whiskeys / Scotches. I'd go there once a week if I could. And yes, they pour Suntory there ("For relaxing times...").

Take a trip to Kentucky. Go to the Buffalo Trace distillery and get yourself a bottle of Ancient Age Bourbon. Believe it or not, it's their low-end bourbon and is fantastic. I grab myself a lot when I visit Kentucky. As a side note- you'll never get a hangover from this stuff.

Don't care much for whiskey. But I do like Jose Cuervo tequila.

Prefer it iced, mixed with 7 UP. However, when I am in one of my foul moods, 2-3 shots will mellow me out in no time.

I'm in Nashville, may be making a trip up over the holidays to Louisville to see a friend. That's not too far from there, I'll try to stop by. Thanks!

You're welcome! A friend's sister turned me on to that when I visited one time. She works in a liquor store in Frankfort, so she knows her stuff. :)

uisce beatha (gaelic for 'water of life')

how in the hell did this thread get to page 3 without a single Bushmills recommendation?!

been everywhere, tried everything, found none better. a toast to you all!

Straight Bourbon is where it's at (Rye if I want something "different")

I am particularly fond of Wild Turkey Russel's Reserve, Kentucky Spirit, and Evan Williams Single Barrel (particularly the recent bottlings).

I finished a bottle of Old Rip Van Winkle recently, which was also quite good.

I've had Blue a couple of times at JW tastings, and at a friend's house. It's very good, but I prefer the Gold--it is smoother and richer to me. The Blue is a little bit edgier, if that makes sense. It is probably the more "interesting" of the two, but with Gold I can just kick back, relax, and enjoy.

I've had the Blue and it's pretty damn good. The whole time you're drinking it you're thinking about how much each sip must cost though!

I like Glenmorangie, Macallan, and Glenlivet. A couple times a year I like to get a whisky I've never tried before at BevMo.

I've only recently started trying bourbon. I agree that Knob Creek is pretty good. Maker's Mark also.

I love Irish whiskey, but I'll take Tullamore Dew over Bushmills.

I just tried Tullamore Dew a couple weeks ago. I wasn't impressed though. Gave the rest of the bottle away to someone instead.

Funny how sometimes you can't even explain why you like or don't like something. No accounting for taste I guess!

A visit to the Buffalo Trace Distilery is a must if you are near Frankfurt, KY. They make a lot of good hooch there! They just started distributing Buffalo Trace in Chicago a little over a year ago and it is pretty tasty! You can get a bottle for about $20.

Yeah, I was talking about BT earlier. I love going down to Frankfort.
