yikes, i'm gonna get black now....that's hideous. sorry man
It's all a trade off. Cracks are easier to see with white and not on black, while scratches are easier to see on black and not on white.

The main difference being that Apple will replace a cracked phone (it's a well-known defect) but they won't replace a scratched phone. ;)

Spoke to apple and they said they will replace it, but since i dont want to drive and hour to my nearest apple store because i dont want to spend £50 in fuel, the only thing they can do is for me to ship my iPhone to them and they will "repair" it and send it back in about 4 days.

I told her that i had to think about this because i cant not have my iPhone because i did it for my business' that i run.

Really not happy :(

I understand you are not happy but seems like a no brainer to me. Wait 4 days or drive an hour....hmmm. I pick drive the hour and get your replacement in one day vers 4 days.

Yea i agree but i dont want to spend £50 of my own money in fuel to drive there when its not my fault!

Noticed a crack on the back of my white 3GS last night. Took it to the local 02 shop and they replaced it and i was out of there in 15 mins. If you got your iphone from 02 i would just take it there.

O wicked!

Ill give them a try, normally they just fob you off and tell you to go to apple!

Thanks though :)

No worries. Hope they exchange it for you. At first the sales rep said she didn't think they could replace it but after she had a chat with her manager it was all fine.

This was at the Leamington Spa 02 store.

You know what gives me a headache? Signing a two year contract AND paying $300+ for a phone that's put together about as well as my son's Happy Meal toys.*

Is there an "ignore" feature here?

This guy's credibility just went down from curb level to flatlined.

If you hate it so much why do you have one?

Because it's an Apple product with good software, and despite it's quality control issues, it actually has some amazing features that would make it hard to go back to another type of phone.

I hate this type of argument. The man paid for a phone, a phone made by a company that prides it's on the quality of its products, and has received something less than subpar in terms of build quality. You can't blame someone for wanting to get what they paid for.

:( Reading these sorts of comments and general feedback. I really don't think I want an iPhone 3GS anymore...

That sucks. I have checked my white 3GS for these problems and nothing.

I would return it for sure,

My iPhone has been deemed water damaged (which is odd because it still works fine) because i took it into apple with a software issue and they voided my warrantee they say. but now i have a 1/2 inch crack going from the usb dock connector up... will apple cover this

I do feel that since we pay a lot for the Device, we should get a product that, physically wise, makes us feel as if we made a good decision.

But everything has some sort of flaws. As long as apple continuous to exchange the phones, then I am satisfied. Besides, if you wait for perfection, you might end up losing more important things! (time, patience, etc)

i have a really small one at my camera. (i honestly don't even think they'd see it under regular light to swap it.) it doesn't bother me right now, but do they get larger?

Actually, I have two. ;)

And to answer your question: because I like the interface, it's the best phone currently available in Japan for people whose first language is not Japanese, it's incredibly useful, and it integrates well with my Mac. Just because, in my experience, the build quality on these things leaves a lot to be desired doesn't mean I hate the iPhone. I love my iPhone! I just wish it was put together better than my son's Happy Meal toys.

They should; one has absolutely nothing to do with the other.

I went through eight 3G's last year, mostly for hardware defects. But yeah, eight iPhones, meaning Apple kept me supplied with shiny new iPhones all year long. If enough people keep doing this, eventually they'll get the point and give us an iPhone that is slightly more durable. ;)

That and your way of thinking is absolutely disgusting.

Seems to be a problem that has been carried through from the 3G that has never been totally resolved. I too was looking to get one of these as they finally enabled mms and message forwarding plus larger storage but all these problems are making me think i will either leave it a few months to see if the quality control improves or wait till the next generation. Shame as my 1st gen touch has been flawless and i had been looking to step up to the next level. :(

I think his way of thinking is brilliant. I don't agree with taking advantage of people/companies...but in this case Mavis has the right idea - Apple needs to get the message that their phones are not up to the quality standards that their customers expect and paid for! Apple deserves to be supplying people with "shiny new iPhones" every couple of months if they continue to use the same crappy plastic!

We get quality by demanding it!

Ok i went to 02 and they swapped it out for me :) the guy said they didnt have any Pay and Go ones in stock but as he said it the manager walked over and told him they will give me a contract one. There is no difference between the contract and pay and go just how they divide them.

Thanks for the heads up on giving 02 another try :D
