to he honest, i am tired of hearing different reasons why apple keeps pushing back release the iPhone 4. why don't they come out and say that they are not gonna offer it in white and just go ahead with the iPhone 5 (or 4GS whichever they may have)? I love apple to death, but with most of the company's focus on iOS and iOS devices you'd think they would be able to get it right. i said this in another post last night but i think its time to bring the focus back to the mac and OSX. or at least half and half.

Because they genuinely think they can get it done. It would be far more profitable to scrap it so that everyone waiting for the white one will just go ahead and buy the black

think about it........................would they realloy spend all this time and money on making the white iphone 4, and then 2 months later completely redesign it.

Wouldn't that be a waste of resources? i think we will see the iPhone 5 with the same design as the iPhone 4

Sorry, but I call this BS

I simply don't believe it at all.

If you spray something white, then you can spray another coating (even a ultra thin metal particle coating if you like) to totally block out any light transfer.

Imagine being in a glass house, you paint the glass white. Yes, the light can come in through the white painted glass, so you give the glass another layer of paint/coating on top of the white and the room will be pitch black on the inside, whilst still looking Shiny white on the outside.

Again, sorry, but I just don't believe any of these made up reasons.

apple is trying to make more excuses to complete redesign the iphone 4. mark my words, this will be their way out from the antenna gate probs. get ready for a redesigned iphone, very soon.

In summary, Apple rushed the iPhone 4 release date. Clearly not enough time for proper testing.

I won't be surprised if we don't see an updated iPhone next summer. By updated, I mean a full update like 3G -> 3GS update. Maybe a minor like white model, proximity sensor and antenna redesign. Internals and screen will probably be the same. Maybe 64GB model. Just my own speculation.

Will it really still look shiny white on the outside after being painted black on the inside? It sounds plausible to me that a thin white screen could cause the issues described in the article......

Let's get this person a job! S/he has all the answers!

Think of companies run by a non expert. Like apple when jobs left. Engineers are given orders by non engineers with the note "I don't see why we can't. Make it happen. "

Hell think of your own boss. How often does that happen?

the issue was only discovered at the last minute at a testing facility Apple had set up for case manufacturers to ensure the compatibility of their products with the new device.

Makes a change from allowing it to be sold by the bucket load then creating a list of phones with the same problem.

I call B.S. on this...plenty of white camera phones and white cameras out there. Especially from sony. You really expect us to beleive that a company with 52 billion in cash sitting around and some of the best engineers can't figure this out? There has to be something else going on.

A very logical assessment

Think about all the other cameras you've ever had. The primary color, one way or another, was black, with whatever other color either painted over it or laminated onto it. Any other color than black will affect the light entering the lens and hitting the sensor. Using a blue plastic body, for instance would have all the photos taken with that camera coming out with a blue tint to a greater or lesser extent. Making the plastic thicker would reduce the effect, but only by making the interior totally black and light tight will eliminate the effect.

What appears to be happening here is that glass has a tendency to carry light. You might make the white coloring quite opaque, but direct light on it will still leak through unless you make it so thick as to be prohibitively expensive and heavy to carry. The LED flash on the camera would also feed light between the layers of opaque coatings, or, if the entire panel is colored white in manufacturing, would still act as a light tube for a certain amount of distance from the source. Look at any colored glass object you can think of and see how translucent it really is to a bright light source.

There may be ways to reduce the light from reaching the sensor, but it will require a tube of black, light-blocking material reaching from the outer body of the phone all the way down to the sensor itself while the flash unit would also need to be isolated from the glass around it to eliminate transmission through the glass itself.

Knowing Apple and Steve Jobs, there's no such thing as 'Good enough.' If he can't resolve the problem economically, then you will not see a white iPhone.

Would love to hear what Stephen Fry and the rest of Steve's VIP cronies that got given white iPhones on launch have to say about this light leakage and 'camera' issue

Oh, of course....

True or not - that it was "discovered" so late in the production cycle is ridiculous. Defend the scenarios all you want - and some of you will. But those that will - explain to me how if you have prototypes in your hand, you don't take a few pictures and realize this issue before going into full production.

Maybe they'll be a press release where Apple will show off their multi-million dollar photography testing studio to show how this wasn't a problem on their campus prior to production.

As someone who has been in printing for several years - the color matching issue was far easier to understand and identify with. But this? If accurate? wow...

I don't think there are actually very many -- but the ones that do exist are white plastic. This is white glass (or rather, clear glass with a layer of white paint on the inside). Plastic would block light a lot more effectively than glass.

I'm stupid and don't understand. How does the colour of casing affect the camera? The casing is around and behind the camera yeah...? The sensor has clear glass in front of it?

this is just silly. this and the other rumor about light leaking from the lcd have to be false. there are many materials which are very opaque. a thin flim or layer would fix these problems. the color matching seems more likely. or like the previous models, the heat turning the white plastic a nasty shade of yellow.

I am speechless. I've been holding out this entire time waiting for Apple to release the awesome looking iPhone 4. which is apparently not coming out... >:O
