That death grip thing was enough to scare me away from getting an iPhone 4 when it came out, I don't care if it's true or not lol. Hope they fix that in the next version.

Not sure why this guy expected the white iPhone to be better than the black one, I thought it was the same product just with a different color.

Can someone explain to me how to check the proximity sensor? Covering it up doesn't do anything - and I think I know where it is. I do know I have ended calls or put them on speaker with the side of my face. Both of those just happened yesterday. Add in horrible (Vegas) coverage and placing a call is an adventure. I can drop a call sitting still...in my house...with a micro-cell.

Why the hell would anyone expect that the color of the phone changes reception of the phone?

If I paint my silver car in bright red, does it then go faster or slower?

Actually heat does effect a car's performance so 2 identical cars, one painted black and one painted white, will perform ever so slightly different (on a sunny day of course) :D LOL Just being nerdy

Death Grip is still very easy to do on mine, I used to cradle the phone in my left hand and tap the screen with my index finger on my right hand. With the iPhone 4 I cant.

I had to change me, to suit the product, nothing major, just a big annoyance, an antenna on the outside is a simply ridiculous design idea, clearly the person who thought it up, knows nothing about antennas.

To Transmit and receive at a certain frequency, the antenna needs to be the correct length, the approximate antenna length to use the Cell Phone frequencies is 10cm.

A Human being is a very good attenuator, by coming into contact with the antenna, you are technically altering it's length, rendering it less sensitive to its desired frequency, and in this case, it doesn't pick up the desired frequency at all.

And no I'm not "Gorilla Gripping" it, Im just holding it tightly enough to support it.

My phone can go from nearly full signal to "No Service" in about 5-8 seconds.

"White iPhone 4 death grip tested"?

More like "Dude holds phone in apartment".

What a joke.

Actually, there is one other difference nobody has mentioned.

No screws on the bottom of the phone.

Neither of these issues have posed a problem for me with my Black iPhone 4. But, I guess I hold mine a bit differently than in the image shown above.

I also haven't had issues with spurious inputs from my face while on phone calls, the only issues I have with the phone, are random dropped calls caused by AT&T's Network

I have been plagued with the prx. sensor issue and have now had 4 iPhone 4's. I have just recently discovered a big clue to the problem.

The Apple Genus would always tell me that it was software related and to set up as a new phone. I did this 5 times and lost all my saved passwords, etc. and it never fixed it so I have been adamant that it is a hardware issue. About every 3 to 4 months I've been going to the Apple Store, demonstrating the problem, and getting another phone in hopes that I finally get a good sensor. On this last phone I got a month ago I decided to just enter my MobileMe info to populate my address book, etc. and not even sync the phone at home. I used it for 2 solid weeks with lots of business calls and never face dialed anyone!! I then downloaded a few favorite apps via my phone and had no problems. I thought I finally got me a good-un. Then at week 3 I synced all my apps via iTunes and bam! Sensor problems!! My conclusion now is that it is an app or two that is causing the issue. My next step is to setup as new, add several apps a day until the problem occurs, delete the offender(s) and then submit my findings.

Anecdotally, the site reports that the white iPhone 4 may have slightly better reception than the black model, although it is difficult to say if there is any material difference.

This is so hilarious, it's outrageous.

Yes, I'm sure Apple would actually admit (never in a million years) the antenna in this model is greatly improved, even it it does look the same from the outside.

Apple is very clever, quite and they never repeat the same mistake twice

I thought MR had set up the iPhone tab to keep this crap off the front page. What is this, the 9th 'OMG It's a white iPhone' story?

Unless the white front and rear plates magically changed the performance of EXACTLY the same internal components this test is retarded...

And no I'm not "Gorilla Gripping" it, Im just holding it tightly enough to support it.

Dude. I can get a pretty good idea of how hard you're gripping the phone based on the way your thumb and the pad of your hand look in the picture. You're gripping it a heck of a lot harder than just "tightly enough to support it".

You can see the stress points where the force you're exerting is forcing blood out of parts of your skin. (Those are the pale bits, most easily visible right around the bottom corner of the phone.) You're also using enough force to cause the pad of your hand to push out over the screen, something that doesn't happen if you're not squeezing fairly hard.

Anybody else can do a simple experiment to verify what I'm saying. Pick up your phone. Look at your hand. Now squeeze harder until what you see resembles Benjy91's photo. That's about how hard he's squeezing his phone.

You had me until "reception is slightly better."

These things have the exact same innards. Period. It would be a manufacturing nightmare to have separate components.

There's no difference in the phones, other than the fact they have white face/back plates.

That's a lot of assumptions and bad logic, IMO. It may be correct, but there's the possibility that they're made at different plants/lines and/or the black model has been silently updated to have whatever change might have been made to the white one OR the assembly lines may diverge after a certain point along the way to accomodate the newer line change. Just ASSUMING that they are made in the same plant with the same exact assembly line and process and then what? Hand-modified to be a "nightmare?" THAT is what doesn't make sense. We already know the proximity sensor location has been changed. Is that a nightmare for them too? My point is you come across as making arrogant statements based completely on assumptions that they MUST be identical internally. They may be, but they "must" not. Just because two models of the same car are made at the same plant, that doesn't make them identical (e.g. A 2011 Mustang and Mustang GT are both built in Flatrock, Mi and they share many of the same basic components, but they are a LOT more different than just a paint job. I wonder how they manage that? It must be a nightmare.).

..The black iPhone 4s initially exhibited problems with displays coming back on while on phone calls, resulting in unintentional touch input. The issue was largely fixed in an iOS update..

I must be one very unlucky, as I wasn't covered by that large group whose proximity sensor problems went away with iOS update :'(
And when I complained about this to the local apple store, the guy there (genius?) said I was holding the phone wrong and I should be angling the phone away from my cheek almost at a right angle... talk about getting inspired by Mr. Jobs.

Excellent, hope Apple learnt its trade and my iPhone 4S / 5 will be good from day one.

I agree.

This will be the first time I've chosen to NOT pre order. I'm not about to trust Apple after being in the middle of Antennagate.

Instead I plan to wait and read about others experience with the upcoming model. If it's well designed and functions as it should, I won't mind waiting for one.

After all I have a few active lines and smartphones, so waiting is no big deal.

white i phone is NOT fixing the proximity sensor

Don't count on it. I just bought the white IPhone three days ago and it is nothing but muted and ended calls with EVERY SINGLE CALL.

I AM TAKING MY NEW WHITE IPHONE 4 BACK TO THE STORE FOR A REFUND

Well if the proximity sensor has been fixed then I must buy one tomorrow. My phone's sensor is terrible.

I purchased a white 4 and I also have a black 4 and I see no difference in the death grip crap or any of that but I do in the proximity sensor area. The white phone does perform a lot better in that area. I haven't hung up or anything on anyone yet. I can see the sensor work now since the phone is white you can see the glare from the phone. But my white and black perform differently in the proximity sensor area. The rest is pretty much the same.
