O2 - say something!!!

You would think by now that O2 might have got the point, there's plenty about the white upgrade on forums, I (like so many) have contacted them directly - both by e-mail and in person at several shops.

Say something!!!

I'm getting fed up with the "Thank you for your interest in iPhone 3G. We are experiencing unprecedented demand for the device and whilst we are confident that all customers who want iPhone 3G will get one by the end of this summer" daily update.

"unprecedented demand" - possibly for the white upgrade?
"Existing iPhone customers looking to take advantage of the special, early upgrade" - not so special as you can only get it in black! Henry Ford would be proud.

White Availability confirmed "in a few weeks" from o2

The other day I got rather fed up about the total lack of information from o2 regarding current iPhone customers who plan on upgrading so I emailed Matthew Key (o2 chief executive) as I felt it was the only way we might get any solid information from head office. (in an attempt to bypass CS who clearly don't know anything about the situation)

Anyway to my surprise I was actually phoned back this morning by someone in the know who was able to answer all my questions. Here is what I gathered....

- From what I could make out, it was o2's decision not to stock the white iPhone. They knew they would be receiving extremely limited stock from Apple over the first number of weeks therefore to simplify the situation just focused on the more popular black model. I'm pretty sure o2 knew the demand for this device just could not get the stock from Apple.

- The reason why existing customers cannot upgrade in Apple stores is due to the system used to access records. Basically Apple have the ability to send o2 customer information, but haven't got the capability to access data and thus check if they are eligible for upgrade.

- o2/CPW WILL be stocking the white iPhone over the coming weeks. The time frame wasn't confirmed but from what I gathered it would likely be later this month. "in a few weeks time..."

- Stocks of this model will be very limited and done on a first come first serve basis. All information will be posted on the website when it becomes available.

So by the sounds of it they are rolling it out in the coming weeks! Horrah! Not ideal but at least we know exactly what is happening now.

I'm beginning to have had enough. I visited both of the O2 stores in Bluewater today. The first said "Oh, it'll be a limited edition out in a few weeks." The second was far grumpier and told me they didn't do them, had no idea when they were gonna be doing them, they were no different except the colour. Well done, brainiac.

As ever, I'm none the wiser about when, or even still IF we will be able to upgrade to the white iPhone. I think the time has come to bug Mr Key about things, hopefully eventually they'll start to respond.

According to the iPhone page at CPW....

Stores - Stock of 8GB & 16GB is available in stores. To check stock availability in your local store click here

8GB iPhone - good stock available across all channels.

16GB iPhone - now available across all channels in Black and White

Note for the 16Gb it says white and back are available across all channels (i.e. online and store)

I would imagine the 26th 'preorder' date is for online only as by ordering now that is the soonest it would reach you. (weekend + bank holiday monday). I'm calling round local shops tomorrow :)

You still can't upgrade online, only in stores.

However, at least it gives us some ammunition against the O2 Store reps when they say the White iPhones "aren't out yet" or "are exclusive to Apple".

But as I mentioned:

16GB iPhone - now available across all channels in Black and White

All channels suggests retail as well as online. ASFIK you can upgrade in a CPW retail shop exactly the same as an o2 store. Therefore we should all be able to upgrade now....!

I'm pretty sure the 26th mentioned online is simply the earliest people can get it if ordering online. (bank holiday monday and weekend won't deliver).

Driving back from hols today so will find out tomorrow and call around. No rush really, waited this long!

Over the phone? Probably. If you click the updates link on the Carphone Warehouse site there is the following:

Ordered one!

I didn't try in store, but I did call CPW and ordered my white 16gig 3G iPhone. The first guy I spoke to told me that I couldn't order until they were showing stock available (expected this afternoon) but then I read on Neil Holmes' White iPhone Blog that he had succefully placed an order so I tried again.

The second guy I spoke to (Soi) was helpful - he had to call O2 for upgrade authorisation (but then he called me back) - and I now have an order number. Shipment will be confirmed later today or over the weekend for deliver on Tuesday :)

Because I've have nothing but negative experiences of CPW until now I have some trepidation about whether this will ship on time but... fingers crossed.

To be fair to CPW it should be said that, even though I declined the offer of insurance, there was no hard sell (unlike when I bought my original iPhone instore from O2 on launch day).

No offence guys, but some proof would really be nice (nothing like trying to back up your argument with "this bloke on the internet said...").

Thanks, and congrats!

Although offically you can't upgrade online at CPW alot of other people in the o2 forum, me included ordered new contracts and then phoned up o2 and all they do is cancel the new contract and move your tarrif up or down depending on package you selceted and also extend your contract - takes 24hrs and no problems at all.

Can't do that anymore... Executive Relations Team said not possible :(

I work for o2, and i just bought one, if thats enough proof?

Well, no, to be honest.

I mean, you could be making it up, for a start. I mean, I could say that I work for Apple and we've just sent a Mac Tablet into production for release in 3 weeks; doesn't make any of it true. ;)

Rush?

Any feel for whether there will be a rush for these?

My feeling is that the general 3G demand has died down somewhat, and only aesthetes like ourselves care enough about the white - I certainly doubt there will be queues at opening time for them.

There may not be a huge amount in the shops at first (the O2 chap who bought one might give us an idea how many shops are getting) but hopefully getting one won't be too hard.
