In my opinion the only reason to get the white over the aluminum is if you need the firewire port on the white macbook.

Get the aluminium one because the white MacBooks have had so many issues. Even without the technical issues, people still get cracking palmrests and stuff. They've never resolved that issue. These MacBooks may have looked similar to the old iBooks, but these things don't seem nearly as reliable, and they don't seem physically as strong or sturdy.

my dad wants me to get the white one and he has put a shadow of doubt in my mind over spending the extra $300 on the alum. one and I just want to have other people's opions that I could take to him to prove that the Aluminum one was better.

I loved my old black Macbook but I have to say that my Aluminium Macbook has made me happier with Apple than I have been for a long time. Even after months of ownership, I'm still admiring how beautiful it is... if you like that sort of thing. ;)

Buy Alu... you'll be happy longer. The White ones will probably be discontinued soon and you'll be stuck with a machine that "looks" older and last gen. Not to mention, LED screens are way better.

Though I will say, no Firewire and crappy WiFi receptions are the negatives for the Unibody.

The aluminium is more "future-proofed" and is a stunning looking computer. However, the white MB offers astonishingly good value (and a firewire port), both, perhaps considerations worth noting. At the end of the day, it is your (or your father's call). If he is paying (and deciding on the purchase) be happy; either of them will be a super computer. If, however, you can justify the extra expense for a truly stunning design (and can overlook the lack of a firewire port) the aluminium MB is the one to choose.

Cheers and good luck

The argument for the aluminum one is build quality and durability. Tell him it has an LED backlit screen so it won't fade and burn out like the displays on the older macbook. The aluminum unibody will be far more rugged than the plastic. If you're just starting college or still in high school, the machine may have to serve you for a few years. Sometimes you just have to pay more for quality.

But yeah, if Dad's insisting upon the white, let him buy it and thank him profusely.

i got the aluminum and my dad thinks that it's pretty cool. I'm typing this on it!!!! This is my first mac.

I just got the new aluminum macbook friday I went from a 17"mbp to the macbook and couldn't be happier. I have 4gb ram and have a mac pro with 6gb ram for my intensive tasks.

which one did you get 2.0 or 2.4

The cost is not much of a factor
he's [...] and just thinks about price.

So maybe the cost is not a factor for you, but for your dad? :p

get the white one has the specs unibody (the whitebook has a smaller Hard drive but you can upgrade that) has and includes a firewire. and not as many issues with the white ones.

and for us power user the new Glass trackpad sucks (my personal opinion)

If there's one laptop I would never want to recommend, it's the white MacBook. I have two at home, both cracked, and I have about 5 friends with them as well and they cracked as well.

Edit:
I noticed this right after I posted

Congrats on your first Mac! Hope it serves you well!
