White PS3 Headed Stateside, Rumored 40GB Price Drop

Title says it, the white 40GB PS3 that is currently only for sale in Japan has recieved FCC approval and will be hitting store shelves hopefully around the 28th. There is also a rumor that Sony will drop the 40GB price to $299.99, considering that the prices of the components have dramatically decreased in price I would not call the rumor far fetched.

Is this ceramic white?

It would look nice next to the Ceramic White PS2, PSP and Wii. Now if only Microsoft would release a Ceramic white 360 ^_^ instead of the matte white. (Mine is misbehaving more and more these days)

At 299$ I'd buy it without a second thought. (Provided they don't remove more features from it than they already have)

Yes it is Ceramic White. Its the same Ceramic White that is in Japan. I can get you the Sony page on them if you want.

well for 299 it sure would give them a huge boost ... for many people that has always been their "personal maximum" ... would easily force nintendo to drop their price lower (about time anyway) and the same for the xbox 360
 
299 is bargain price, but to be honest I think the sales have been boosted enough by the 399 price point that I doubt we will see a 299 price point until next year or xmas this year at the earliest.

Remember price is always generally cheaper in Japan.


Would have loved a ceramic white ps3 though..... but two ps3's in I cant justify yet another :D
 
Woah! $300, that's really cheap. Only $50 more than a Wii! This would boasts their sales A LOT and then I'd have more local friends on PSN!
 
$299 would be spectacular, and it would sell like hot cakes.

They'd have to bring the 80 GB down in price to $399 or nobody would buy it :) I'd certainly be all over it. It'd be cheaper than a 360 premium even before you factor in XBox Live's cost!
 
They just introduced the $399 one. It would upset, yet again, the people that just bought one if they drop it to $299.

I did take advantage of the Sony rebate and got it for $299 - well worth it.

If the deal ends, then I guess they could drop it to $299 outright. If the deal continues, then you'd be able to get a PS3 for $199...

Even if it does upset the people who bought the PS3 during the holidays, I think they'd understand in the long run. If Sony does put it at $299, sales would skyrocket, especially since it'll only be $50 more than the Wii. It'll definitely help them in selling software as well, something that they really need right now.

Oh and the Devil May Cry 4 demo is AWESOME! Just downloaded it from the JPN store. :D
 
Little bit of an update,

As of Monday, January 28, 2008 there will be 3 Playstation 3 SKU's available in the US market.

  • 40GB White Playstation 3 - $299.99 (missing B/C, 2 USB ports, and memory-card readers)
  • 40GB Black Playstation 3 - $299.99 (missing B/C, 2 USB ports, and memory-card readers)
  • 80GB Black Playstation 3 - $449.99 (software based B/C, 4 USB ports, has memory card readers)

Also it seems like a retailer has slipped up and started selling them at $299.99 already

This is still all a rumor, but if anyone can remember Sony denied the last price drop despite a leaked Circuit City ad, and another retailer receipt that showed an advanced sale. Sony didnt acknowledge the price drop last time until the day that they formally announced it.

Sony is actually turning a slight profit on some of the PS3's right now, manufacturing costs are way down and Sony would rather take a loss on the hardware considering the huge titles on deck for 2008. Dropping the price this low would have a pretty big effect on the sales of software and hardware.

Plus pushing more PS3's further entreches Blu-Ray in to consumers homes :)

Feck em, just after buying a spare 40gb for my apartment for €399... I could kill sony at times I would have got a ceramic one instead....

Yeah, I agree. I've got this feeling that they will drop the price to $299. It only makes sense, since Devil May Cry 4 will be out a week later, and they've gotta start dropping Bluray player prices to keep competitive against HD-DVD, since they're going insanely low on prices right now. Well, we've got 4 more days until they announce it officially...
 
but...the CC/BB Flyers are already out for early Feb and they don't mention the price cut.

I'll definitely be keeping my eyes on this to see if it does indeed happen - I hope so!

Didn't realize DMC4 was coming out so soon. What's the latest on MGS4?
