White PS3 Headed Stateside, Rumored 40GB Price Drop

I think I might buy a white PS3 on this lap...thats very tempting....I wonder if Sony is still taking a hit or still breaking even with this price cut....this is going to shoot the PS3 sky high...although it was doing very good with the $399 price point.

If that's the case then, you can go online at the SonyStyle.com store, open a credit card, and get a $100 rebate on anything over $299.

That means a PS3 for $199...

We'll see if the deal ends on Jan. 28 and they just give you the price drop only...
 
Ahh, I just bought the 40gb model for Christmas. If this is true I will be a bit disappointed I paid $100 more than the price only a month later. On the other hand, more users on the platform is also a good thing.
 
^^^^ What about those that paid $599 at launch - better yet, $2000 on eBay!

I'll tell you one thing:

Since Sony believes the PS3 had a really successful launch, and decides to make the PS4 $599 and $699 and expect people to camp out for it - they are in for a big surprise...

Yeah, I hope so too! Then I'll probably nab another one for a Bluray/Living-room PS3! Yaaay! I may even buy the white one to match my white dual-shock 3. 😀

DMC4 comes out on Feb. 5th! And about MGS4, there's rumors flying around that we may get a demo sometime next month! Sony is on a role this year!

Ahhh me too... plus I'm leaving on a trip so it almost will have been worth it to wait if the rumor proves true (I have a feeling it will)

This is still all a rumor, but if anyone can remember Sony denied the last price drop despite a leaked Circuit City ad, and another retailer receipt that showed an advanced sale. Sony didnt acknowledge the price drop last time until the day that they formally announced it.

Sony's denial means nothing. They denied the 40 GB PS3 till practically the day before it came out.
 
Sorry, didn't see that. I read the "denial" this morning before seeing this thread and didn't notice Ed's comment while skimreading.

Sony knows their launch was crap, they know the price was way too high or they wouldn't drop it twice in a year and add cheaper models. They just aren't gonna come out and say it, because for some reason companies can't admit mistakes openly. Just like MS won't come out and say "hey guys! um... yeah our failure rate is totally unacceptable and we should probably redesign the system a bit to get those failure rates under the 10% they are now at..."
 
If the price does indeed drop, I'll be picking one up pronto. I'd have to see the white in person, but I'll probably end up with a black one either way. PS3+360 FTW, as the saying goes.

Question is - does Sony take the loss, DO IT NOW, and try to gain ground on MS/Nintendo?

Imagine: STILL can't find a Wii in the stores, walking in and finding the PS3 only $50 more??? Or the XBox 360 (w/ 20gig hard drive) for the same price???

If you only have money for 1 console, the PS3 is the future-proof no brainer.

Think about if they also drop the price of the PS2 to $99 - now B/C is less an issue, for the old price of $399 just get both machines...
 
I'd get a 2nd Folding console, er PS3😀 for $299. The ceramic white would fit in nicely between my 360 and Wii, and I'd move my 60GB baby into the bedroom.

i'd be more inclined to expect a 40GB at $349 and a new top end at $449, though. $299 is just too dang cheap to believe.
 
I gotta say; as much as I think wii & 360 is going to kick some booty this generation, if PS3 goes to 300 dollars, it will blow everyone away.

Turns out this article got the scoop directly from Sony:

Despite online reports suggesting otherwise, SCEA says a $299 PS3 is nothing more than wishful thinking.


"We have no plans for any pricing announcements on PS3," a Sony representative told GamePro in an email on Tuesday. "What you are hearing is purely rumor and speculation."

Rumors of a PS3 price drop to $299 surfaced on Monday in connection with the newly confirmed white PS3.

According to multiple (and some hokey) reports, the $299 PS3 news stems from "several posters at SlickDeals.net," something a website administrator later clarified to just one vague and dated reference on an unrelated thread.

The rumor was based on an article from a previous price drop. Make sense - the $399 PS3 is doing well, HD DVD is slowly dying anyways, and you can get it from SonyStyle.com for $299 if you open a Sony credit card (which I did).

The price drop won't come, if not by the end of today or this month, until around October for the next holiday season.

It is 8:40AM on Monday morning... Again Sony has denied price drops until the day/m inute they annouced it. This has been said at least 2 times in previous posts....

I've been doing more thinking about it and I think I will in fact pick up a PS3 sometime this year. I'm not in a rush, so whether the price drop happens now or 6 months from now, I'll be fine with that. 😎
