I usually buy a few extras (so I can afford to lose a few before needing to refill) so I can have fun pranking people on planes playing movies who hasn't locked down their remote setup.

Who Actually Buys The Apple Remote?

I use the one that came with my iMac all the time. I watch movies and TV shows in bed on the iMac and I can watch anything I want with the remote, even turn the computer on and off with it.
Now that I have a MBP, I want to get another remote for it.

I bought mine originally purely for presentations. On whole it makes the presentation look very formal and professional, and because I use Keynote the audience is amazed by the slides.
I have recently purchased an App called Sofa Control which extends the use of the remote to mutiple applications that come with Mac. Without Sofa Control the remote only works with a select few apps (iTunes, Keynote, iPhoto etc). Now it can operate PDFs in Preview and control various other apps.
