Retail? No but i got a deal used and have been enjoying it. It does all I’ve needed so far. If it was retail price I’d have gone for the 13”. Only a little bit bigger but you get a lot more. Unless performance doesn’t matter too much, then the 12 will shine in portability and small foot print, else 13”.

Oh ok, the 13” Pro isn’t much more bigger than the 12” I think. And like you say there is more for the money, P3 disaply, True Tone and so on I believe that’s just in the display.

It is an Internet browsing machine.

Maybe someone out there wants to spend 1200 USD to browse the Web?

Those are the kind of people who buy MacBook, for now.

Everyone else buys MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, or Mac desktops...

Really? Switched from a Pro to the 2017 MB. Love it. Does a hell of a lot more than browsing, including video editing. Never going to a heavier laptop again.

Those who have both the 12” MacBook and an iPad, which do you take with you when away on trips?

It sounds daft, but I can’t decide whether to take my MacBook or my iPad on an upcoming trip?

When I am going on just a short overnight trip, I take only the iPad. When it is going to be for several days, I take both the iPad and the MacBook, and each serves a purpose. Each is small and light and convenient to tuck into the luggage, so why not have both with me?

It's only a quick trip. Thinking of MacBook for the journey and iPad when out and about. 3rd world problems huh?

Yes, usually I lock up the MacBook in the hotel room safe (or hotel safe if there is one behind the checkin desk) and carry the iPad with me during the day. I usually drive wherever I'm going so the MacBook doesn't get used until I'm in the hotel room at night and need/want to download or manage documents or images. If I travel by public transportation I usually just use the iPad.

ARHHHH Now that's a good one Dave! For someone like me who travels the world and is away from the UK for 8 months of the year, I know that i'm a great example for this question.
AND the answer is simple. I use 2 things ONLY. These allow me to run my digital sports marketing & social media business 24/7 from any beach in the world :)
THEY ARE...

1. My 12" MacBook AND
2. My iPhone X (for listening to music, watching films on the planes, Eurostar, trains etc).

I've never been into iPads - I find them unsexy slabs of screen and sadly, they don't excite me in anyway.

And that my friend, is my answer. (Whilst travelling, the MacBook is packed in my man bag and ONLY the iPhone is in use - it does everything very well).

PS The biggest secret in the world for travelling is - TRAVEL LIGHT!!!!!!!!! The people that get stressed at the airports are the ones who pack & carry far too much! Often, I only take hand luggage!!!

AND... The folding 13AMP Apple iPhone changer is a wonderful thing to keep in your bag along with the European Apple iPhone charger :)

Thanks for your replies folks. I'll definitely be taking my MacBook. I was away Thursday to Saturday this week and took my MacBook. Yes, I left it in my hotel room. Didn't take iPad, just iPhone so as BODYBUILDERPAUL recommends, I'll probably do the same again. I always carry a power bank battery thing but only use that for my Apple Watch. That said, my 3rd gen Apple Watch has a fantastic battery life. The 1st gen was terrible.

Sounds brilliant Dave! The 12" MacBook and the iPhone really are a perfect match :) If i'm travelling late at night, I love watching a favourite film on the X or even a part of a film. I'm using AirPods too which I find are truly incredible! No more getting my arms caught in cables or snapped cables at the 3.5mm jack which always happened on my other earphones over the years!
I've noticed a few friend's at the gym recently with the Apple Watch :)

Yeah, I've got the AirPods too. I'm all "Apple'd" up! MacBook, iPad Pro 10.5, iPad mini, AirPods, Apple Watch, HomePod, Apple TV 4K and iPhone X. Use an Apple Leather case on my X also!

Haha OMG :) Apple TV 4K is brilliant with the iPhone X and MacBook isn't it :) I'm in love with the WSL World Surf League App on it :) :) :) :) :) and RedBull TV :)
I didn't realise that you had the X - it's a super size for travel isn't it!

Yeah, I find the X the best iPhone yet and every year say I'm not going to get the latest one but every year end up doing so! I had the 7+ (best phone ever etc) but love the slightly smaller X.

I'm thinking of just giving Apple my bank details and just let them take my money every time a new product comes out. I might as well!:cool:

You’ve managed to resist the reality distortion field then :) I can’t say as I have, in fact you could say I’ve failed miserably :) i have iPhone X, Apple Watch first gen, iPad Pro, MacBook Pro 2011, iMac 2012, HomePod and Apple TV and if that’s not enough I also have Apple Music. You could say I’m not just in the Apple ecosystem, I’m so deep not even a shovel could get me out :D

iPhone can also do video editing, but that doesn’t make it an appropriate video editing machine.

Absolutely, but different people have different priorities. My priority is weight and size. Video editing, I do once a couple of months. Can't beat the MB for this. That's why choices are good. Duh.

Well i think my MacBook Pro 2011 has died, it turns on but there's pink lines going across the screen, after the Apple logo it get's stuck on a white screen before either resetting itself or i turn it off. It has served me well for the past 7 years.

Typical that it's this close to the Apple event as well :( i REALLY hope they announce new Mac's at the September event!

Day two of my trip and MacBook is still on 72% battery. Heading home tomorrow so really didn't need to bring charger. Great battery.

:( Hopefully, you still have all your necessary data.

In a roundabout way though, I might say that is almost a good thing for you. You've been talking about the purchase of a new machine for just about forever, but now you HAVE to buy something soon. ;)

Yes all my data is backed up to an external hard drive and iCloud. I regularly back up anything that I write so as not to lose anything in situations like this.

You are correct on that, I’ve been going backwards and forwards for what seems like forever now! I’m just hoping that Apple reveal the new MacBook Air at next months keynote, then I will have all of the information on the MacBook range to make a final decision. As for the short term I’m going to try and manage with using my iPad Pro 12.9” and my iMac at home.

I can’t complain really since my 2011 Pro has served me really well over the years, when I was at university it got used on a daily basis (although it was heavy to carry around) for a number of things ranging from video editing to just plain old web browsing and photoshop work.

7 years is good going i’d say and longer then any Windows machine I had before it!

I seriously doubt that Apple will announce anything regarding Macs at the iPhone event. That event will be focused on iPhones and iOS, and probably also the new iPads, which makes sense since iPads are also iOS devices.

Possibly later in the month when the time comes to release Mojave, there will be an announcement of refreshes to some of the Macs as well as the redesign/update of the MBA at that time (although not necessarily another event)......

They do sometimes announce everything together such as WWDC last year, hopefully updates won’t be too long either way. I just think it would be silly of me to buy now (yes even tho my MacBook Pro has died today) when updates are 2 months away at most (October at the latest) then I can make a final decision between the 12” MacBook, new Air or the MacBook Pro 2018 13”.

WWDC is a bit different, though, a much more generalized presentation than the annual specific iPhone event and keynote; at the latter, iPhone event, they usually spend time talking about iOS and all the wonderful new features and functionality the newest update will offer and they spend time talking about the iPhone and the various models, etc., plus there is always the statistical bit thrown in there, too, along with demos of software that will work nicely with the new iPhones (or iPads) and the latest version of iOS. Oh, and maybe a fun opening sequence video like they've been doing recently. This time iPad Pros will probably be part of the presentation, too, which they haven't done in the past, as they were updated at different times of the year. Just my thoughts on this. By the time they get through all that, really not enough time to talk about a new version of the MacBook Air! Of course I suppose they could toss it in there right at the end, pulling one of Steve's famous "....and One More Thing...."
