If there is one return policy in gadget land that can described as hassle free its Apple's...

But to each his own. If you can wait, then by all means. I have not been endowed with such patience and self-control...

It's not exactly hassle free with iPads.

If they do what they did for the iPad 3, then all online orders will have to be sent back. IMO, that's hassle.

I'm waiting to see this in person. I have a feeling I'm not going to be happy w the screen quality. I want so much to love it since I think the size will be so much more convenient but I think this is one of the times I need to just wait for the retina mini.

I'm so used to this large display now, I'm also questioning If I'll be happy viewing smaller screen now. I dont even touch my iphone 5 unless it's super quick search. Of course the mini will be a lot large than the iphone but it's hard going smaller and inferior screen quality.

Again, only like the weight/size of the mini when I'm NOT using it.

Right about GPS wrong about Retina

I just can't comprehend it. Apple holds out on simple features like retina and GPS. KNOWING they will release the same damn thing next year with those feature.

They do it on purpose.

It is true that Apple could have added GPS to the wi-fi model with little effort or cost. The same is not true of retina, Apple had 3 options:

1. Release iPad 2 level screen to maximise profit (cost down), battery life & keeping App compatibility.

2. New resolution to reach retina level, reformat all Apps.

3. iPhone 5 resolution, increased cost and reduction in battery life.

All 3 options have pro's and con's, in time Apple will deal with the screen issue but only when option 2 or 3 have less con's attached.

At the current time of release there is no win/win situation.

I think people who maybe move from a 3 to a Mini will absolutely hate the screen.

Talk to me next year when the mini has retina display.

:)

Some one is in denial.

Of course it will have a retina display eventually, maybe even next year. There are constant improvements in lowering power consumption. Apple might get enou savings elsewhere to include the drag of more pixels. But it isn't included now just for a marketing reason. There must be technical issues or cost issues.

I was all set to get one and then I compared my iPad 3 screen side by side to my Mom's iPad 2 and am worried it might be a difficult adjustment to make, even though the screen on the mini is still better than the iPad 2 screen.

I also have a friend who has a non retina iPod touch and I sort of cringed when I saw that in comparison to the retina screen on my iPhone 5 and iPad 3.

I decided to buy it to test it out.

I don't need to see it in person to know it is vastly inferior to my iPad3, and buying it would be a waste of money.

I wouldnt not get the mini... I own an ipad and if i truly had to get a smaller tablet i would go for the Nexus7.

I just don't like the hassle...a simple glance at an Apple Store should help me decide.

I really like to buy it, really! But the non-Retina display is holding me back. :(

I have an ipad 2 that I am selling today to fund my ipad mini. I'm going to wait in line at the Apple store on Friday. I always thought the ipad 2 had a great screen. I've never thought to myself that the screen was anything less than exceptional. I even brought my ipad 2 I to best buy a few months ago to compare side-by-side with the ipad 3 and really couldn't see the difference. So the ipad mini will be just fine for me.

Very true especially for students that use ipad as notebooks. I cant see myself writing on a mini. Would prefer a bigger screen.

Same here. I agree, except I opted for the pre order instead of waiting in line at the Apple Store.

I've never done it so I thought I would see what it's like. I work at night and get out at 4:00 am. So I figured I'll just head over to the apple store then. I am in Hawaii for work and my hotel is only 3 blocks away.

I love how retina displays are no longer an issue now that apple releases a brand new product without one. In the past, a lot of users would flaunt and compare how beautiful their retina displays were compared to other devices. Now its no big deal.

@thread topic: yes, me! can't decide between black or white ^__^

white sold out first, so it seems to be more popular, but maybe that's cuz that was the one featured more so in the video? I'm leaning towards black, so there's less contrast with the bezel while watching movies & viewing photos! :)

I'm curious to see it in person.
I think it may turn out to be bigger than expected.
The sweetness of the Amazon FireHD is a very nice screen that's very portable and fits in a coat pocket with ease.

I've lived without the iPad Mini (substitute any other new product) until now, so it's not going to kill me to wait a couple more months to see the device in person and to read the critics' and users' reviews. Sometimes I end up loving a product I thought I'd hate. Sometimes the converse is true. So I'm going to wait.

This.

Cellular models do have GPS. Wireless, no

In fact none of the Apple wifi-only iDevices had GPS in the past 5 years since iPod Touch came out so it's highly unlikely Apple will add it next year.

One challenge for iPad mini Retina is the battery. Apple had to pack in a ton more battery for iPad 3 to get the 10 hour battery life with Retina. I'm not sure if Apple will do the same with mini since the light weight is such a big deal with mini.

Also if they cannot get enough non-Retina displays in 2012, I wouldn't bet on iPad mini getting the Retina next year just as it happened with iPad 1 and iPad 2. It'll be nice if they could do add Retina next year but my thinking is that Apple will at least get two years of production run out of this display.

Very true and that's the running theme with Apple fans. On the other hand the iPad mini is the first generation device whose main selling point isn't its Retina display so the lack of Retina isn't as glaring. 3rd gen iPad was all about Retina and if that thing came out without Retina people would've been really disappointed.

I too believe that retina may never be on the iPad mini or at least not for awhile due to battery size and perhaps cost. The iPad mini will likely become their low end product with all the features reserved for the larger iPad. How else will they get people to buy the more expensive tablet if they gave you everything in their smaller tablet? I could very well be wrong but that's how I see it for now.
