I am definitely waiting to see these in person before i purchase. Although retina wasn't a deal breaker, I love the overall portability of this device. I will have to play with it and test it to see if i like it. But i have been waiting for a smaller ipad since apple released the first generation ipad. I am really hoping it is not a disappointment, but i will wait until i get to personally test one before i drop any judgement on the product based off specs alone.

The screen on the mini will be better then it is on the iPad 2 because its a smaller screen so I'm not sure why everyone is comparing the two screens.

I too believe that retina may never be on the iPad mini or at least not for awhile due to battery size and perhaps cost. The iPad mini will likely become their low end product with all the features reserved for the larger iPad. How else will they get people to buy the more expensive tablet if they gave you everything in their smaller tablet? I could very well be wrong but that's how I see it for now.

They will just discontinue the larger iPad if it doesn't sell enough.
They did it with the 17 Macbook pro. The 17inch was the top of the line workhorse with much better specs than 15inch.
That didn't seem to matter and now it's gone.
No one wants big and bulky anymore.
In 5 years the 9.7 iPad just might be a thing of the past.

This is a very interesting comment.

i believe it. once you have ipad 4 in an ipad mini form factor... who wants to carry around that heavy lug.... unless they can make it 'super' thin. . .
time will tell.

I love how retina displays are no longer an issue now that apple releases a brand new product without one. In the past, a lot of users would flaunt and compare how beautiful their retina displays were compared to other devices. Now its no big deal.

I have the retina display on my iPhone and think it's neat. However I have an iPad 2 without it and I'm fine with that. I've also pre ordered the iPad Mini without it and I'm fine with that as well. People have choices and it's nice to see such a wide range of choices in Apple products.

Oops, to stay on topic . . . I will see the iPad Mini in person when the Fed Ex person drops it off at the door. However I can understand why someone may choose to see it in person first before making a purchase. I've never had to do that with Apple products because I, pretty much, know what I'm "getting into" before I buy.

From App Advice:
Here is what many are missing, however. Much of the criticism is focused on what the iPad mini is lacking compared to the full size iPad. This assumes that Apple is targeting the compact tablet to existing iPad owners, which they are not.

Instead, the iPad mini is for those that have yet to join the tablet revolution and/or currently use another iOS device, such as the iPhone or iPod touch.

In other words, try using your iOS apps on the Kindle Fire or Nexus 7. You can’t.

And the lack of a Retina display? Believe it or not, but most consumers have absolutely no idea what Retina means except that a retina is part of an eye.

Regardless, by the end of the week the white iPad mini was sold out. And most likely it will be the most popular technology product of the holiday season.

Very interesting Bokes and you could very well be right. My son who also loves his 17 inch MBP was pretty annoyed when they took that option away. I never understood why he wanted to carry something so large around all the time.

I ordered a mini and that is how I plan to see and evaluate it. I have the iPad 1 and the iPad 3 already but I'm holding off selling either of them until I see the mini myself. Non retina doesn't bother me but I so hope they have at least a gig of ram in these things.

I'm picking one up at bestbuy on friday -- 60 day no questions asked return for silver members. A whole two months to play with it.

Yeah, right. Apple holds back technology so that its devices don't have as large advantage as they can have against its competitors. In this case, the lack of retina screen can't possibly have anything to do with battery size in a mini not being able to push all those pixels for a long enough period of time.

thing is, along with the competitor's everyone has high expectations of being wowed by every product they release, which is why they may decide to hold off on putting out the latest technology into it for the next model.

While I do agree, the retina display is great, I think I can live without it. My only gripe is the A5 processor when the A5X, A6, and A6X are all out. Although, for it's price, maybe I shouldn't be complaining.

there's a reason it's selling out... I played with one today - a family friend works at apple.

the size and weight are fantastic. its what all tablets need to be-- same size/weight as a pad if paper. incredible! for those concerned, screen res was fine (i have an iphone 4s).

decision is memory (16/32/64) and wifi vs wifi+lte...

How was the speed?

I have owned the first 3 iPads. My current iPad 3 is only 4 months old. I l love LTE and the screen resolution but HATE the weight. I use my iPad as a work tool and I can tell the extra weight.

I'm going to have to see the Mini before I buy it. I want something that is lighter. But here's the deal, iPad 3 is to heavy for my personal taste now. If I use mini I will NEVER want the heavier larger iPad again. Even if I prefer the larger screen. :-(

I think the iPad 5 will be lighter, but it will not be as light as 10oz any time soon. I also agree--I think iPad mini's weight is very attractive. The only reason I feel hesitant is that I wanted retina very badly, as font that is not sharp personally bothers me a great deal.

I decided to buy it via preorder that way I have it on launch day without waiting in lines and if I decide I don't like it return it and get full money back

I also want to see it before committing 100%, but I don't live near an Apple store so pre-order is the easiest way for me to check it out without making a big trip. I'm not sure whether I'll like it or not--it really depends on how I feel about the screen. but I do know that I'll like the weight and size (approximately the same as my Sony 7inch aluminium reader).
