I'm a database manager, work with computer graphics, prepress, filemaker developer. I run both windows and OSX as I need to work in/on both platforms.
At home I use this for my personal stuff, music, web design, emails, etc.

I wonder if 16ish is a good age to buy one.

At your age, I'd stick with a MacBook. They're plenty fast enough, and I'd be surprised if you'd be using all the additional power the MBP provides. But if you (or whoever's buying) have the cash, go for it.

As for me, I use mine for compiling thousands of lines of code every day. No computer will be fast enough for me until the # of cores in the cpu = the # of files I have to compile. That's gonna be a while ;)

I bought one at 16. I still have the same one at 21.

I should have waited until I went to uni and just used the school computers until then. Then I wouldn't be arguing with myself about whether to update this one now or not and I'd have got more for my money.

If buying another one when you graduate in 2 years isn't a problem then why not, otherwise you might as well wait. The vast majority of the people I know only bought their own laptop around the Summer before they went to university.

These were the exact answers I was looking for, and I love computer coding and hope to major in stuff like that in the future, THANKS!!

I'm an IT researcher and lecturer in Biology. My MBP helps me present presentable keynotes for my lectures.

I'm a Network Security Architect, designing and implementing firewall and IPS installations for large companies. This little baby holds all my technical docs, but primarily I use it for writing documentation for clients and configuring devices. I have an iMac at home for all the non-work stuff.

I'm a system's administrator, though I don't use my Mac for that job. I use it primarily for my photography and personal use.
admins ftw :D i would love to get into that sort of stuff - at uni learning it all now (well not really, uni seems to be a waste of time).

I go to lots of dodgy websites, and I can avoid viruses by using OS X. I have remained disease-free to this day, so it has been money well spent.
ditto. had a few scares but avoided them calmly.

I'm that girl who sits around all day finding ways to make you look stupid, tell you to **** off without actually saying it, or apologies profusely and insincerely.

I don't have a MBP but if I did it would not help my case as I use a windows PC for work.

Im a first year undergrad at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. Pursuing a degree in Biological Sciences.

First time user of the Mac. Have the Mac Mini as my desktop. Works like a charm.

Don't worry I don't need any help looking stupid :p

If we're rounding ages I'm in my early 20's. Bought a Powerbook for university (studied design) - it served me well so even after university I carried on buying Apple laptops. Now I'm an independent game developer. Running both an iMac and Macbook (the one before they dropped the separate audio ports and added Pro to the name). I need both OSX and XP so these 2 machines do me fine!

I'm the crazy one. The rebel. The troublemaker. The one who sees things differently. While some may see me as the crazy one, I see genius...

I'm more of a what trying to figure out who he is.

Some people call me Maurice, wahhh-wahhh!

I once programmed on Apple ][e's in BASIC (Apple all my life, except PC at work). On my MacPro I've organized my personal life (at least the non human-contact part). I edit personal HD video/photos. I am in the process of digitizing my entire DVD collection and pre-digital camera photos. I multitask, juggling several of these activities simultaneously while posting on MacRumors. I access hospital records when I am on call (have to boot into Windows 7 b/c the xray viewer the hospital uses isn't Mac-friendly).

And although I occasionally drink a Dos Equis, I am NOT the most interesting man in the world.

Wow change of plans, the college I want to go to like Windows more and it will have programs sometimes only compatible with windows.
