I think Apple should seriously consider putting blue ray drives in most of their computers! I could see excluding the mac mini and maybe the low end macbook, but I think many people would really like this feature:D

i think it would jack the price up like 300 bucks. and i think its somethinkg that most people wouldnt want.

dont care, its a waste of money as far as im concerned, digital downloading is the future imo

it is kind of pointless unless it is a Blu-ray Burner - good for
1. optical Backups for important general data
2. making home blue ray discs - for professional or amatuer use.

One of the things Apple is best at is serving the prosumer marketplace - a blu-ray burner does this well.

If I order a mac form Apple online right now, there will be a long list of optional extras, some of which arguably appeal to fewer people than Blu-ray. Why deny people the Blu-ray option?

It's not a bad idea adding it to certain mac's. (Mac pro & Imac's) It should be added as optional for those that may want it. I personally don't want to pay an extra $300 for a B-R drive. I have a blu-ray player & I don't use it as much these days. I've been waiting for the movies come down in price. Seems like that's never going to happen.

of course hdds never fail...

hdds will fail well before optical disks disintegrate

That's kind of a strawman argument. With HDDs, you use RAID, and take steps when one of the disks fails. You can't really compare HDDs and optical media as each has strengths and weaknesses that complement each other, and a good backup strategy uses both.

I only really care about software support for BR movies. I have a computer, I have a drive, I have PowerDVD + Windows, I'd just like some OS X playback software.

i wasnt making any argument....i merely responded to a post saying that using optical disks for backup is a poor choice and then states that using hdds is much better

simply not true

i have both static and dynamic means of backups

I have PS3 for watching Blu-Rays so I have absolutely zero interest of Blu-Ray in a Mac. Mac Pro and Mini are the only ones I think "needs" it. When it's as popular as DVD now, then of course I want one

X2
Are you reading my mind? lol but dvd and cds are so going to be trashed very soon..

I really don't understand why anyone would be against a BTO option of anything. I don't see anyone complaining that they offer a BTO Fiber-channel card upgrade option on MacPros. They could offer a built in toaster for all I care. If you don't want or need it then just don't get it and ignore it. :D

I like the idea of a Blu-Ray player on my Mac, and indeed I would probably pay for a Blu-Ray drive as a BTO option (assuming Apple also provided appropriate playback software). Saying that, as much as I want it I probably wouldn't really get that much use out of it but it would be nice to have

I just want Blu Ray and HD DVD playback software. I already have a Super Multi Blu burner that I still haven't used (bought it already even if it's not the fastest because I don't know for how long one will be able to get a unit with HD DVD ROM support, and I still don't own any HD DVD or Blu Ray).

Yes, I know HD DVD is dead, but some titles haven't been rereleased in Blu Ray.
