I like Apple Watch. But where is the line in the sand? Is my surge a luxury device for a few dollars less? What's a Rolex then?
To me aw is a very nice upscale, maybe premium, electronic companion, far from luxury though. Same as iPhone, nicely packaged premium device.
Edit: I know there is some hair splitting, but to me luxury items are far, far out of my reach as opposed to being an "expensive" doo-dad.

Indeed, the price tag doesn't constitute it as a luxury watch if compared to other brands, but it does qualify as an expensive gadget. I own watches that cost more than the AW but wouldn't be considered luxury timepieces.

Why does there need to be a line in the sand? For me the AW is a luxury item, to you, something else.
To put it another way, who cares what others think is luxury or not. This is the point I'm making, why should it matter to you (or anyone else) that some feel a product is a luxury and others do not.

Yes it is.The Apple Watch doesn't do anything apart from notifications and a limited selection of watch faces and it's a first gen product with many flaws.It does not do at it's price point what other devices can do.I can buy a Nexus 6P or even a iPad at that price point.Only someone with cash to burn on some limited feature set will use it's limited functionality

Okay the Apple Watch is not for you. The functionality appeals to me and what it does it does well and more importantly has the support of the developer community. If you want forgo the watch and buy a spare 6p or iPad around go for it.

Well, I'm not the OP but I'll stir the pot a little. I think the AW was promoted as a luxury item on it's rollout. Remember all those celebrities wearing the gold AW? That's creating an image. That is a luxury, exclusive image. By the way, the gold AW would be luxury by anyone's definition, I'd think.
I'm not saying the AW is a luxury item. The gold would certainly be to me. I'm just saying Apple promoted that exclusivity pretty hard in the beginning. Now they are not.
A lot of "luxury' products are mostly advertising and hype. Apple was working on the advertising and hype on the AW at the beginning.

Apple have tried hard to position the watch as 'fashionable' and not just another nerdy gadget for us techies : this entices buyers from other non tech groups as well. Using celebrities is just one way of catching the attention of these prospective new customer groups.

They were hammering our brains with the idea that the watch was a super luxury item for classy people. Recently, they started selling the watch at Walmart. Seems as though they have given up on that idea for the time being.
Making that luxury available to everyone. Seems like a good way of going about it.

I don't feel let down, because I've collapsed the expectation that Apple is going to lead the pack as they did at one time.
Yes as an Apple enthusiast I'm very disappointed and miss being excited about upcoming products, but that's Apple's choice when they fail to impress. They're in the profit taking mode and have been for the last three rather dull years. You either innovate, or sit back getting fat and happy while just raking in profits.
At some point things may change and Apple may resume doing their best work.

I sincerely hope it turns out to be 2016--the stage is set, Apple just needs to come out swinging. There is no S model iPhone this year, so we get a redesign of the iPhone, we'll get a 4" iPhone, we'll get Skylake Macs, iPad Air 3 with Apple Pencil support (hopefully), next gen Apple Watch which will drastically improve on the current watch, and a host of new software. Apple has the chance to really innovate this year, let's hope they take the chance and run with it.
Too bad they got their work cut out for em this time around looking at the beauty that is Galaxy S7 Edge.
Also we have done this before.Anand puts a label of Editor choice on anything which comes out of Apple

Was wondering who the first was to be to bash anandtech. doesn't matter, 6s got the gold star and Apple got the profits.
As far as the s7, exactly the same type of thing was said last year with the s6. And we know how the profits turned out for the i6 release. S7 is a beautiful phone, but personally I'm holding out for the i7.

I'm really excited for the iPhone 7 as well. 2015 was a year that I had very little excitement at all. This year I'm pumped to see where Apple goes!

I'm probably least excited about the 7, mostly because of the rumored loss of the audio jack and the possibility of an even thinner phone.

I am a bit on the fence about the 7 too. My main reason is questioning if I want to pay the premium this time around when I really am a basic smart phone user. The other concern like yourself is the rumour about the audio jack being lost. I have various earphones scattered around due to breaking them or needing them in locations like work and home etc. Do I really want to buy an expensive adapter or complete expensive earphones for something that up until this time hasn't needed to change? Apple aren't really filling me with the urge to buy this year based on this.
I think the iPhone 7 will be another iterative release.
It is becoming increasingly clear, and it pains me immensely to type this, that Apple under Tim Cook is rapidly losing it. I don't think they have that incredible visionary approach to product that they did under Steve and have become another big corporation cynically raking in as much profit as possible while trading on a brand name.
Tim is a bean-counter, not a product man. And you've got cretins like Eddie Cue running important aspects of their services into the ground.
Not holding out my hopes, but maybe they will surprise us all with another iPhone 4 moment?

I'd have to agree, though my ire is with the obsession on iPhone/Watch/potential Car - to the detriment of everyone else. These are high profit items and of course the iPhone is responsible for the hugely successful Apple we see today.
However, this profit driven approach has really rankled myself and others that use Apple desktop/laptop computers and software. An example - the pursuit of profit has meant that the Mac Pro has been completely untouched for 2 1/2 years now. No element - processors, memory, storage, GPU etc has been upgraded in that time yet changes were perfectly capable of being achieved. Applications like Final Cut Pro and Compressor receive minor updates only and are now uncompetitive. These all seem neglected in favour of shiny new things.
And don't get me started on how poor the software quality is - El Capitan is such a move backwards from previous releases. Breaking the yearly upgrade cycle would be a good start but I fear Apple seeks headlines and publicity with gimmicks over developing quality.
It appears most engineering effort is going into new Apple Watch bands 😉 yet people seem to lap these sort of things up as exciting changes.
I think this is going to be an interesting year. I hope Apple is going to come out with some across the board updates that impress the entire Apple consumer base rather than concentrating solely on yet more new Watch bands, an iPad 0.01mm thinner than the previous one and another iterative iPhone, however the real interest seems to be purely on improving the profit margins yet further.
