I'm just saying bc apple won't let anyone use multi touch then why should google let them use the search engine, google apps, maps, etc?
You're comparing two completely different things:
Apple don't want to license multi-touch to maintain the iPhone / iPod touch "uniqueness", and that's their choice. Google are happy to license their apps because they make their money from advertising - I wouldn't be surprised if they actually pay Apple to include Google as the default search engine because it gives them advertising revenue from the millions of users of the iPhone / iPod touch.

Back on the topic of the thread, I couldn't care less about street view on my touch - I very rarely use the maps app anyway because it's pretty useless if you're not in a Wifi hotspot...

well, first off.. if we are walking down the street, what are the chances you have free wifi running around to help you guide your way?!?!?!

so i think its pointless, unless your phone is a wireless modem. but yea street view shouldnt be mandatory for ipod touch's its not like we can use it anyways, unless we are next to wifi spots

THANK YOU! I've been wondering the same thing. Do you guys have internet capabilities other than wifi that we're unaware of? How would you be able to use the street view if your driving in your car or walking down the street?

Why would you use street view if your on the street. Just look up. I think street view would be used on the touch to see what the place looks like before you get there. IMO

actually apple will let ppl use it they just have 2 change at least ONE thing. ex. the HP Touch Smart. also google WANTS apple to use google its good advertisement for google.

well where i live (and most of southern ny including nyc) optimum gives free wifi to their subscribers so ME. also wifi is EVERYWHERE now get w/ 2008.

I'm very disappointed, more about the walking directions than the streetview, but either way it sucks. Hopefully the member above was right about it being due to a battery drainage problem and hopefully we'll see it on the next update. Not holding my breath though.

I wanted to see how this worked, i'm a bit disappointed that we can't. I know its meant to work with gps and everything, but it can work without it, surely?

So yea, whos the guy that cares SO MUCH that they send me insulting Instant Messages in response to my personal opinion?

Thats just sad guys.

All I said was I personally dont care, but I can see why others are dissapointed, its stupid that apple went through extra work to NOT include it when they could have just released it andd kept people from bitching.

Anyway, was I wrong to think this forum had a higher level of maturity than others?

well what about those who dont have wifi floating around for us? the majority doesnt have wifi so its not fair that it will be useful for those who have wfi floating around

Get a g1 people. Apple shouldn't even be allow to use google things . They won't let google use multi touch so why should apple be able to use google . Plus street view isn't even good . I tried it on the g1 and it sucked . It's just pointless. Apple isn't playing nice.

why would anyone "get" (wrong grammar btw) a G1? Why would Apple not let Google use multi touch? It's a free concept. I could go and design a phone with multi touch. It's not as if multi touch belongs to Apple...

Street view is useful for people who know what it does. That's everyone but you. Apple nor Google is "using" each other. Street view is also not pointless, your post is that.

I honestly cannot see why anyone would get disappointed with the lack of street view when maps.app no longer stores anything in a cache. I can understand getting upset over the lack of walking directions and mass transit schedules (which don't work well, anyway), but getting upset over the omission street view seems a bit pointless. Unless for some reason you need to know what a building looks like when its address isn't enough information, that is.

Aha. And who would want to use StreetView while you are walking or driving through the streets that you are seeing on the screen? What sense does -that- make? I mean besides causing a car accident because you're not paying attention to the traffic, but only to your precious gadget?

But how about you sit in one of the countless cafés or restaurants with WiFi connections and you plan your next sightseeing tour while drinking a nice cup of coffee? I don't know about the US, but public WiFi hotspots in cafés are quite common in Europe.

By the way, why does the iPod Touch have Google Maps and why can you download Google Earth from AppStore? What's the rationale for that if you can only use them through a WiFi connection and not while you're hiking? Following your logic, these apps also don't make any sense on the iPod Touch.

There simply is no excuse why Apple has left out that feature from the iPod Touch. But they'd probably not even allow a third party implementation of this in their AppStore, because it would take away some exclusivity from their iPhone.

By the way, wasn't the iPhone the only Internet-capable phone on the planet that does not support tethering? Heck, it does not even support Bluetooth-connections to your car's handsfree equipment. Now what are the excuses for that?

What do you mean Apple shouldn't be allowed to use google things? They have deals with google that allows them to use their products. Where have you been? Google is more than happy that Apple is using their Maps and their search engine.

Google make ridiculous sums of money from advertising, and the more searches, the more money they make. It would be insane for them not to provide services for Apple.

P.S. I think that someone said that this may be due to GAAP rules. Something to do with the fact that they can't provide new features for free if they aren't guaranteed to get any more money from people i.e. they make money from iPhone contracts, but you may never buy anything from the iTunes stores if you have a touch, so no guaranteed money.

I happen to have wifi pretty much everywhere where I am. So speak for yourself:rolleyes: Your obviously missing the point, there's no reason to leave it out because some people wouldn't use it.

I have an internet capable phone that doesn't tether, what's your point?

So the 250 MB update I downloaded actually does nothing for my ipod Touch? I see nothing besides the Street View that I thought was on their that would make me want to download this update. What makes it worse is the people getting shorted are the ones who have had to pay for the last few updates Apple has released.

Incorrect. Even in the middle of the city here I rarely get any Wi Fi signal.
